Serj Tankian Biography

Serj Tankian was born on August 21, 1967, in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, to Armenian parents. After his parents divorced when he was five years old, his family relocated to Los Angeles, California.

After graduating from Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School, he continued his education at California State University, Northridge. It was around this period that he began to experiment with musical instruments and to compose songs for himself.

In 2002, he and Tom Morello co-founded the non-profit group ‘Axis of Justice,’ which continues to this day. On June 9, 2012, in California, he tied the knot with Angela Madatyan, who had been his long-term lover.

Aside from his musical endeavors, he is an avid animal rights activist, having signed the PETA petition against the butchery of chickens at the KFC slaughterhouse in Kentucky.

He and the other members of the rock band ‘System of a Down’ appeared in the film ‘Screamers,’ which was based on the beliefs of the United States on genocide and in which they played themselves. In addition, he has planned and participated in a number of demonstrations pertaining to human rights, social justice, and genocide prevention and response.

He formed the band ‘Soil’ with Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and Domingo Laranio after meeting them at a music festival. Following the departure of a handful of band members, the surviving members, which included him, founded the group known as ‘System of a Down’ in 1994.

In 2010, he released his second solo album, titled ‘Imperfect Harmonies,’ on Reprise Records and Serjical Strike Records, respectively. It was in November of the same year that ‘System of a Down’ officially stated that they would begin performing live gigs in the United States and Europe, as well as that they would be reuniting for tours.

In 2011, he took a break from music to co-write a play based on the ancient Greek tragedy ‘Prometheus Bound’ with Steven Sater, which was performed in New York City.

The American Repertory Theater presented a performance of this piece. ‘Harakiri’ was the title of his third studio solo album, which was released on July 10, 2012, and was a follow-up to his previous record, ‘Imperfect Harmonies,’ which came out in 2011. It was the same year that he published his fourth studio solo album, ‘Orca,’ which was then released as a recorded version the following year, as well.

In 2013, he released his fifth studio solo album, titled ‘Jazz-Iz Christ,’ which was published under the label Serjical Strike. The music on the album is a fusion of rock, progressive rock, and jazz influences.

It was in 2005 when the band was awarded the Europe Music Award for ‘Best Alternative Act. A Grammy Award for “Best Hard Rock Performance” was given to the band “System of a Down” in 2006 for the track “B.Y.O.B.” It was released in 2006, and it appeared at number 14 on VH1’s list of the “Top 40 Metal Songs of All Time.”
