Jackson was born in Washington, D.C., on December 21, 1948, and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, under his grandmother’s strict supervision. When he was ten years old, his mother, Elizabeth, joined them. Jackson was an early film buff who frequented the local cinema, where he was introduced to the nuanced messages surrounding the Black representation on television. For the Black audience in Chattanooga, versions of Band of Angels were changed to exclude a scene in which Sidney Poitier slaps a white woman.
As Jackson enrolled at Atlanta’s historically Black Morehouse College and became more interested in the Black-power movement, his early experiences stayed with him. He was expelled from the college after protesting the shortage of Black people on the board of trustees by locking many board members in a building for two days during his junior year in 1969.
Jackson was inspired to act after seeing a show by the Negro Ensemble Company the same year. After two years working as a social worker in Los Angeles, Jackson returned to Morehouse College to study acting and graduated in 1972. Jackson entered the Black Image Theatre Company after college, where he met his future wife, LaTanya Richardson, at Morehouse’s sister school, Spelman College. They toured the world, performing skits to largely white audiences that were marked by a fiery combination of anger and humour.
After exhausting their passion for politically charged theatre, Jackson and Richardson relocated to Harlem, New York City, in 1976 to pursue an acting career outside of those clearly established racial boundaries. Richard Wesley’s The Mighty Gents, an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage, and Samm-Art Williams’s Home were among his first Off-Broadway roles. He also got a job filling in for Bill Cosby during rehearsals for The Cosby Show.
