Romeo Santos was born Anthony Santos in New York City on July 21, 1981, to a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother. He was born into a middle-class household, and while working on a construction site, his father battled to provide for his family’s survival.

Romeo acknowledges that he was an incredibly close child and a mama’s boy because his mother was a housewife.

Romeo’s parents were musical, and he was exposed to a variety of musical styles as a child, which he admired. His parents listened to tropical music, and Romeo grew up listening to Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata and became highly inspired.

At the age of 13, Romeo joined a church choir and discovered his vocal abilities; with the group’s encouragement, his goals grew larger, and he later created a local group named ‘Los Teenagers’ throughout his adolescence.

Although the album was not a commercial success, the band gained attention for their distinctive style of fusing traditional base music with pop and hip-hop elements. In 2002, the band released their second album, ‘We Broke the Rules,’ which followed the same sound pattern as their debut.

Their little fan base in New York City appreciated the effort, and the group gained notoriety as a result of the widespread word-of-mouth publicity. However, in 2004, one song from the album, ‘Obsesion,’ broke through to the mainstream music arena, establishing Aventura as the most exciting young New York band.

The song transcended national boundaries and became enormously popular throughout Europe, reaching the top of the charts in France, Italy, and Germany. Apart from contributing vocals for the albums’ songs, Romeo also wrote the words for the majority of their chart-topping singles.

Enthused by the massive success of their second studio effort, the band went on to record five new albums over the next few years, with several of their singles receiving widespread critical and popular acclaim.

While the band was performing well, the members were also working on their own projects. The band took a ‘pause’ in 2011 and, despite media speculation that all was not well between the members, Aventura returned to play at a concert in 2014 and continued traveling for the next two years.

Romeo announced publicly in April 2011 that he will go solo for a period of time to explore the possibilities outside the band.

Romeo released the lead single ‘You’ from his debut solo album ‘Formula, Volume 1’ in May, and the song was an instant hit, reaching the top of various Latin music charts. Following the success of the first single, the album’s second single, ‘Promise,’ was released in cooperation with Usher.

Romeo wowed the crowds at Madison Square Garden in 2012 with back-to-back three-day performances, and it was such a smash hit that the organizers had to issue the concert’s CDs named ‘The King Stays King: Sold Out at Madison Square Garden’. He also electrified Yankee Stadium with his electric performance, becoming the venue’s first Latin act to do so.

In 2014, he released his second album, ‘Formula: Vol 2’, which contained numerous collaborations with prominent musicians like Carlos Santana, Nicki Minaj, and Drake. A few weeks later, the album became the year’s best-selling Latino album. Romeo released a single titled ‘Heroe Favorito’ in February 2017 to minor popularity.

Apart from music, Romeo has been in two critically acclaimed films. He starred alongside Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Dwayne Johnson in the seventh installment of the popular action-adventure franchise dubbed ‘Furious 7’. He also provided the voice for a character in ‘The Angry Birds Movie.’
