Roger Marshall (Politician) Biography

Marshall, an obstetrician, was elected to Congress for the first time in 2016, defeating incumbent Tim Huelskamp in the Republican primary for Kansas’ 1st congressional district. He launched his candidacy for the United States Senate in the 2020 election on September 7, 2019, seeking the seat vacated by Pat Roberts. Marshall defeated Democratic nominee Barbara Bollier in the Republican primary on August 4 and was elected on November 3.

Marshall joined a group of Republican senators led by Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz on January 6, 2021, to support objections to the electoral votes in Pennsylvania and Arizona, which were both overwhelmingly rejected by the Senate, 92-7 and 93-6, respectively.

Roger Marshall Career

In the Republican Party primary contest for Kansas’s 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives, Marshall faced incumbent Tim Huelskamp. Many Kansas agricultural organisations backed him, unhappy because Huelskamp had lost his membership on the House Agriculture Committee, the first time in a century that no Kansan had served on the panel.

During the primary, Huelskamp’s team launched TV ads blaming Marshall for a 2008 incident with a neighbour over a land dispute; the guy called 9-1-1 accusing Marshall of attempting to run him over with a vehicle. Marshall eventually pleaded no guilty to a dangerous driving misdemeanour and agreed to settle the civil suit with his neighbour.

The rival campaigns and outside groups (super PACs) spent millions of dollars on attack ads, and the primary was expected to be close, but Marshall won by 14.2 percentage points with 40.3 percent of the vote, despite the fact that the second-place finisher (Kobach) and third-place finisher (Kansas City plumber Bob Hamilton) combined for a higher total. Marshall won every county west of Emporia except one. He defeated Kobach 47 percent to 26 percent in Sedgwick County, which includes Wichita.

He was defeated by a plurality in Wyandotte County, which includes Kansas City, and by pluralities in the rest of eastern Kansas counties. In the main election, Marshall ran against and beat Democratic State Senator Barbara Bollier. He joined a long line of prior congressmen from the “Big First” who went on to represent Kansas in the Senate; the district’s congressman is normally considered a statewide political figure due to its huge size. He succeeded Roberts, who served in the 1st from 1981 to 1997; from 1997 to 2011, Kansas’ senior senator, Jerry Moran, represented the district.

Marshall challenged the results of the 2020 presidential election, arguing that “governors, secretaries of states, and activist courts” in “many states” usurped legislatures to alter voting laws. As a result, he declared his opposition to the certification of the Electoral College tally scheduled for January 6, 2021. He would also call for an election commission to look into “ballot integrity” and make states responsible to the Electoral College’s time-tested constitutional framework.

Marshall advocated conspiracy theories during the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were boosting coronavirus death rates. Marshall’s posts were taken from Facebook due to a violation of the company’s policy against “harmful disinformation.”

In Kansas, Marshall opposes Medicaid expansion. “How many people can afford to leave the Medicaid programme and enter the commercial insurance market,” he argues, is how he “evaluates success.” In a March 2017 interview, Marshall explained his opposition to Medicaid expansion by saying that some people “simply don’t want health care.” Marshall said that his comments were taken out of context and emphasised his work as a doctor at a free family planning clinic in the area, which he claimed was the only one that accepted Medicaid.
