Robert Kiyosaki was born in April 8, 1947. He was of Japanese-American descent. His father served as a teacher and coach, allowing young Kiyosaki to attend more prestigious colleges.He graduated from Hilo High School, after which he enrolled at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in New York, graduating in 1969 from the same school as a deck officer.

After finishing his schooling, he began working on merchant ships, enabling him to fly to different parts of the world. He was introduced to new cultures and ways of life as a result of these journeys. He also saw people suffering from extreme poverty all over the world. These voyages had a profound effect on him.He served in the Marine Corps as a helicopter gunship pilot during the Vietnam War in 1972. He was awarded the Air Medal for his service. He left the Marine Corps two years later. However, he moved to New York instead of moving to Hawaii.

He took up the persona of a Xerox Company salesman selling copy machines from 1974 until 1978. Meanwhile, in 1977, he started a company of his own that brought the first nylon and velcro ‘surfer’ wallets to the market, having saved enough money.

He did not pay attention to the quality of the goods as a way of reducing the cost of the wallets, which contributed to a decline in demand, thereby causing the company financial losses. In the end, bankruptcy was unavoidable.

He started a business at the beginning of the 1980s that licenced T-shirts for heavy metal rock bands, such as Motley Crue. While the company initially produced exceptional financial results, the heavy metal band’s choice gave way to lighter music with a change in fashion, leading to a decrease in demand. In 1985, the company went bankrupt.

He invested money in stocks and shares and real estate during the booming era of his second venture. However, his debts to banks also rose as time passed and business deteriorated. He was left penniless and homeless in order to repay the same amount.

Despite hitting rock bottom throughout his life, he never gave up hope and instead used his expertise and insight to help others escape bankruptcy and achieve financial success.
