Richard Lynn Scott  is an American politician and businessman who has served as the junior United States senator representing Florida since 2019. From 2011 until 2019, he served as the 45th governor of Florida, representing the Republican Party.

Scott is a graduate of the University of Missouri–Kansas City and the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. He co-founded Columbia Hospital Corporation in 1987, after serving in the United States Navy and becoming a partner in a law firm. Columbia soon combined with another firm to establish Columbia/HCA, which grew to become the country’s largest private for-profit health care provider.

In 1997, Scott was forced to leave as CEO of Columbia/HCA due to pressure. The firm cheated Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal programmes throughout his term as CEO. In what was at the time the largest health-care fraud settlement in US history, the Department of Justice penalised the corporation $1.7 billion. Scott became a venture capitalist and pursued other business interests after leaving Columbia/HCA. He established Conservatives for Patients’ Rights in 2009.

In 2010, Scott ran for governor of Florida. He nearly defeated Democratic nominee Alex Sink in the general election after defeating Bill McCollum in a hotly contested Republican primary. Scott was re-elected in 2014, defeating Charlie Crist, the previous governor of Florida. Term constraints prevented him from seeking reelection in 2018, but he ran for the United States Senate instead.

Scott defeated Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson in the 2018 US Senate race. The first election results were so close that a recount was required. Scott had won by 10,033 votes, according to the recount, and Nelson had conceded the election. Scott took office on January 8, 2019, after his stint as governor of Florida came to an end.

Scott and Richard Rainwater, a Fort Worth banker, each put in $125,000 in working capital in their new firm, Columbia Hospital Corporation, in 1988, and borrowed the rest of the money to buy two failing hospitals in El Paso for $60 million. The remaining two fared significantly better after a year. Columbia Hospital Corporation controlled four hospitals with a total of 833 beds by the end of 1989.

In September 1993, Columbia made a $3.4 billion equity purchase of Galen Healthcare, which had been split off by Humana Inc. a few months before. Galen had approximately 90 hospitals at the time. Galen investors owned 82 percent of the merged firm after the transaction, with Scott continuing to lead it.
