Rey Mysterio Biography

Rey Mysterio was born on 11 December 1974 in Chula Vista, California, as scar Gutiérrez. Although nothing is known about his parents, he was coached from an early age by his uncle Rey Misterio Sr., a well-known professional wrestler and trainer.

Rey Mysterio Career

Rey Mysterio made his professional wrestling debut in Mexico in 1989, at the age of fourteen. Between 1992 to 1995, he fought Asistencia Asesora y Administración (Assistance, Assessment, and Administration), a Mexican organization. He later signed with ‘Extreme Championship Wrestling’ in 1995.

He challenged Cruiserweight Champion Dean Malenko in his first match at the Great American Bash, which Malenko won. Mysterio battled primarily against high-flyers such as Ultimate Dragon, Juventud Guerrera, Billy Kidman, and his longstanding opponent, Psicosis, whom he defeated in July 1996 in ‘Bash at the Beach.

He held the title for three months. Throughout this time period, he had to defend his title against numerous opponents, including Ultimate Dragon, Super Caló, and ultimately Malenko himself. Mysterio ultimately lost the title after he was defeated by Malenko at the Halloween Havoc. Later that year, in November 1996, he challenged Ultimate Dragon for the J-Crown Championship.

He was, however, unsuccessful. In 1997, Rey won the Cruiserweight Championship for the second time, defeating Guerrero in a match. He was defeated by Guerrero in November, and the latter reclaimed the title. Rey Mysterio won his third Cruiserweight Championship in January 1998 after defeating Juventud in a contest. He lost it to Chris Jericho after nine days.

He later formed a tag team with Billy Kidman to fight at the Latino World Order later that year. Later in his career, Mysterio challenged Kidman for the Cruiserweight Championship but was unable to reclaim it.

In 1999, Mysterio was forced to remove his mask when he and his tag partner Konnan were defeated by Kevin Nash and Scott Hall in a ‘Hair vs. Mask battle.’ He expressed profound disappointment at being exposed and stated that he removed it only out of necessity.

He made his WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) debut in 2002 with a new and improved mask. He eventually rebuilt his tag team with Billy Kidman after facing Chavo Guerrero, Kurt Angle, and Big Show.

Later that year, he formed a tag team with Eddie Guerrero and the two won tag team titles. Guerrero, on the other hand, was secretly jealous of Rey, as he had never beaten him. As a result, he turned on him during a match, and after leaving him, he beat up Rey as well.

At WrestleMania, this “jealousy and feuding” was part of a storyline designed to pique the audience’s curiosity. Guerrero also divulged a secret they had shared regarding Rey’s son Dominick around this period, out of frustration—this, too, was part of a scenario. Guerrero was actually Dominick’s biological father, whom he abandoned while Dominick was a baby with Mysterio.

They had a ladder match for his custody, which Rey won. Rey was later defeated by Guerrero, bringing their feud to a conclusion. Rey Mysterio later became the World Heavyweight Champion in 2006, after defeating Randy Orton.

This was followed by a conflict between Mysterio and John “Bradshaw” Layfield, who claimed he deserved to win the World Heavyweight Championship. As a result, Rey was forced to fight three adversaries chosen by Bradshaw.

He was defeated but reclaimed his title in a rematch with Bradshaw. Rey Mysterio later challenged Bradshaw for the Intercontinental Championship in 2009. Rey won the match in just twenty-one seconds, becoming the World Wrestling Entertainment’s 21st Triple Crown Champion.

In 2011, Mysterio competed in a WWE Championship tournament. He progressed to the finals, where he squared off against The Miz.

Rey triumphed and claimed his first WWE Championship. He did, however, lose his title later that day to John Cena. He later faced Alberto Del Rio, the new champion, to recapture his championship. Mysterio, on the other hand, lost.

After leaving WWE in 2015, he was re-signed by Asistencia Asesora y Administración. He is now signed to Lucha Underground, which he joined in December 2015.
