Rand Paul (Politician) Biography

Rand Paul was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the United States on January 7, 1963. Carol and Ron Paul are his parents. The older Paul served in the United States House of Representatives and ran for President of the United States three times.

Kelley Paul, a freelance writer, is Paul’s wife. William, Duncan, and Robert are their three boys, whom they married on October 20, 1990. Robert went to a private school in the Washington, D.C. region, while William and Duncan went to the University of Kentucky.

The American Board of Ophthalmology certified Paul to practice in 1995. (ABO). The ABO had modified its certification scheme three years before, in 1992, from awarding lifetime certificates to requiring ophthalmologists to recertify every 10 years, while those who had already been granted lifetime certification were not needed to recertify.

Paul thought this was unjust, and he launched a campaign to require all ophthalmologists to recertify every 10 years. He founded the National Board of Ophthalmology (NBO) in 1997 to provide an alternative certification method at a cheaper cost than the ABO.

Paul, his wife, and his father-in-law were named as board members. The NBO was never recognized as an accrediting body by organizations like the American Board of Medical Specialties, and many hospitals and insurance companies regarded its accreditation as illegitimate.

Paul let his ABO accreditation lapse in 2005, which had no impact on his profession in Kentucky because board certification is not required. According to Paul, the NBO certified around 50 or 60 doctors.

The NBO was formed in 1999, but when Paul failed to file the proper documentation with the Kentucky Secretary of State’s office, it was disbanded in 2000. In 2005, he resurrected the board, but it was disbanded again in 2011.

In 2017, Paul helped reject a Republican-led effort to repeal and replace the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA; 2010); he opposed the proposed replacement plan, arguing it was too similar to the PPACA. Paul made headlines again in November 2017 when he was assaulted by his next-door neighbor, who subsequently pled guilty to felony assault; the incident, which left Paul with bruised lungs and broken ribs, was apparently sparked by a “yard disagreement.”

Following a whistleblower’s accusation that Trump had extorted a foreign government to probe one of his political opponents, Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in 2019. The case then went to the Republican-controlled Senate, where Paul made headlines by exposing the purported whistleblower’s name, despite the fact that the person’s identity was protected by law. Paul voted for Trump’s acquittal in February 2020; the president was acquitted on a near party-line vote.

The coronavirus was spreading throughout the world at the time, eventually causing a global pandemic. The United States’ economy suffered a slump that matched the Great Depression as schools and companies shuttered. Paul became the first senator to test positive for the virus in March 2020, and he was placed in self-quarantine. He resumed his public activities the next month.
