Rachel Kushner Biography

In Eugene, Oregon, Kushner was born, the daughter of two Jewish Communist scientists, whom she termed “very unsafe, beatnic individuals.” In 1979, Kushner relocated to San Francisco with her family.

At the age of 16, she began her political economy study at UC Berkeley with a focus on US foreign policy in Latin America. Kushner traveled as an exchange student in Italy at the age of 18, and after graduating with her art degree, she resided in San Francisco, worked for nightclubs, and rode Moto Guzzi.

At 26, she enrolled in the Columbia University fiction department and obtained her MFA in creative writing in 2000. The American author Don DeLillo is one of her influences. Kushner lives with her husband Jason Smith and their son Remy in Los Angeles, California.

Rachel Kushner Career

The debut novel of Kushner, Telex from Cuba, was released in July 2008 by Scribner. After finishing her MFA in 2000, she acquired the concept for her novel and made three long journeys to Cuba over the six years it took her to write the book. The cover review of the New York Times Book Review on July 6th, 2008 was Telex from Cuba, which describes it as a “multi-layered and fascinating” news, whose “strong insights of human nature and the imperialist prejudicialities give a thorough grasp of the origins of the revolution.” Telex from Cuba was the national book award finalists for 2008. Nan Graham is Kushner’s editor.

The second novel by Kushner, The Flamethrowers, was released in April 2013 by Scribner. Vanity Fair lauded her because of her “flaming writing,” which “inspires the New York and Italian art scenes in the ’70s.” James Wood complimented the novel in The New Yorker “Sparklingly alive. It’s full of stories, anecdotes, monologues, smart, selfish tales, and unhappy adventures. Kushner never tells a narrative… It’s successful because it’s so full of colorful tales and history, all of them beautifully alive.”

The 2013 Flamethrowers was selected as the top-ranking book of the National Book Award 2013 by The New York Magazine, Time Magazine, The New Yorker, O, The Oprah Magazine, the New York Times Book Review, The Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Vogue, Wall Street Journal, Salon, Slate.

The third novel of Kushner, The Mars Room, was published in May 2018. It was awarded the Man Booker Prize in September 2018. Following completion of her MFA, Kushner spent eight years living in New York City where she edited Grand Street and BOMB. She has written extensively on contemporary art, including several stories in Artforum.
