Percival Everett Biography

Percival Leonard Everett was born on 22 December 1956 at the military post near Augusta, Georgia. The name of his father and mother is Percival Leonard and Dorothy Stinson Everett. Everett graduated in philosophy at the University of Miami in 1977. He subsequently studied philosophy at the University of Oregon before moving to Brown University wherein in 1982 he got a written AM.

Everett authored his first book, Suder, in 1983 during his time in Brown. Suder is a comedy story about a 3rd base guy for the Seattle Mariners who is on the Pacific Northwest adventure with an elephant and a young runaway to break the slump of his player.

Since graduating from Brown Everett, a life of writing and teaching has been balanced. He has been a successive professor at the Universities of Kentucky (1985-1989), Notre Dame (1989-1991) and Wyoming (1992), and at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Riverside (1992-98). (1998-2012). Everett has also worked as a ranch worker, a secondary school teacher, a contest judge, and a jazz musician. He is presently living in California and married another author, Danzy Senna. Two children are in the relationship, Henry and Miles.

Everett grew up with a fondness for the American West that had appeared in several of his creative works, but his mastery of various genres made him a big audience. Some of his work includes criminal novels, revisionist Westerns and Greek mythology recitals, as well as the wild caper Glyph (2014), told by a newborn prodigy who, while still standing on paints, had read much of Western philosophy.

Percival Everett has composed a series of conceptual poetry collections such as Re:f (gesture) in 2006 and Swimming Swimmers Swimming in 2010 as well as several storybooks, including For Her Dark Skin (1990) Big Picture (1996), and Damned If I Do (2004), and several books. He got the most notice and recognition from the writings. Erasure, the first novel, was released in 2001.

Here a great, but now forgotten, black author returns to fame and wealth by creating a satire of urban fiction. I Am Not Sidney Poitier (2009), his second novel, is about an orphan who suddenly acquires a big portion of the Turner Broadcasting System (TBS). Percival Everett by Virgil Russell is the final of his famous books (2013).

Everett has earned many prizes, including the 2011 Believer Book Award for I Am Not Sidney Poitier and afterward the 29th Dos Passos Prize for his numerous creative works. He has also earned a fictional Guggenheim Fellowship (2015) and a presidential Phi Kappa Phi Medallion at the University of Southern California (2015).

Everett is highly commended for his storytelling and for his ability to deal with the worst problems of our times with humor, elegance, and creativity. He has written over 30 books and story collections, including Telephone (2020), 2021 finalist.

Everett was awarded the Dos Passos Award, the PEN Center United States Fiction Award, the Josephine Miles Literary Award, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, the Believer Book Award, the Gregor von Rezzori Award for Creative Capital, the BS Academy Award of Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is a Guggenheim Fellowship winner.
