It was on July 1, 1916, in the Imperial Japanese capital of Tokyo that Olivia Mary de Havilland was born. At the Imperial University of Tokyo, her father Walter Augustus de Havilland taught English. Walter went on to become a patent lawyer.

A former theatrical actress named Lillian Augusta was her mother. Joan, Olivia’s younger sister, was a well-known actress in her own right. Her father was unfaithful to her mother, resulting in a strained relationship between the two of them. When the daughters were young, they broke up.

After that, Olivia and her mother, and her sister relocated to the United States. The young Olivia had training in ballet and piano as a child. She attended “Los Gatos High School,” where she excelled in both academics and sports.

She was also a part of the school’s plays. In 1933, she appeared in an amateur production of Alice in Wonderland.

Although she had an interest in acting, she desired to become a teacher in the public school system. Following her high school graduation in 1934, she received a scholarship to attend Oakland’s Mills College.

At the same time, she was cast as Hermia in a theatre production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare.




As a result of her performance as Hermia, she was offered a movie deal. A five-year contract with Warner Bros. was inked when she had to pick between teaching and performing.

Olivia de Havilland had dated a number of men prior to her marriage, including Howard Hughes, James Stewart, and John Huston. For her first marriage, she wed playwright and novelist Marcus Goodrich in 1946.
