Mitchell McConnell was born in Sheffield, Alabama, on February 20, 1942. He recovered from polio at the age of two thanks to his mother’s intensive therapy sessions, and went on to become a brilliant baseball player.
Addison Sr. took a new job in Louisville, Kentucky, and McConnell was elected student body president at DuPont Manual High School. He held the same position at the University of Louisville before earning a B.A. in history with honors in 1964. He graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law with a J.D. in 1967.
Secretary Elaine L. Chao, the 18th United States Secretary of Transportation, is McConnell’s wife. She has also served as the president of United Way of America and as the director of the Peace Corps.
After law school, he worked as a principal legislative assistant for Senator Marlow Cook and then as a deputy assistant attorney general for President Gerald Ford.

Mitch McConnell Career
McConnell was elected as the judge-executive of Kentucky’s Jefferson County for the first time in 1977. Early in his tenure, as a moderate Republican, he backed public employee collective bargaining rights and directed federal funding to the construction of Jefferson Memorial Forest.
McConnell defeated Walter D. Huddleston for a Senate seat in 1984, making him the first Republican to win a statewide campaign since 1968 and the only Republican in the country to beat an incumbent Democratic senator that year.
McConnell was appointed to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during his first term in the Senate and campaigned for tax reform. He became renowned for his resistance to campaign finance reform after his re-election in 1990, and he successfully lead an attempt to defeat legislation on the subject in 1994.
In 1996, McConnell was elected Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and he proceeded to defy the odds at key occasions. Following the bipartisan McCain-Feingold Act’s passage in 2002, he sued the Federal Election Commission, and in 2006, he voted against a constitutional amendment prohibiting the burning of the American flag.
By that time, the junior Kentucky senator had established a reputation for political astuteness and the capacity to form alliances. In 2002, he was elected party whip, and four years later, he became Senate minority leader.
As the public concentrated on President Trump’s impeachment hearings in the House of Representatives in the autumn of 2019, McConnell and his fellow senators took a back seat. In December, the House of Representatives voted almost entirely along party lines to impeach the president for abuse of power and obstruction of justice, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to immediately forward the articles of impeachment to the Republican-controlled Senate, leaving McConnell to haggle with Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer over the trial’s terms.
After the Senate trial began in January 2020, McConnell used his Republican majority to his advantage, stifling Democratic attempts to change trial procedures and summon witnesses. The Senate voted along party lines on February 5, 2020, to acquit Trump of both impeachment allegations, causing Trump to hail McConnell for a “great job” in a celebration address.
