Michael Gerard Tyson was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 30, 1966, to Jimmy Kirkpatrick and Lorna Tyson. Stewart believed he had taught Tyson everything he learned in 1980. He introduced the young boxer to Constantine “Cus” D’Amato, a legendary boxing promoter with a gym in Catskill, New York. D’Amato was known for taking a keen interest in up-and-coming fighters, even offering them room and board in his home with Camille Ewald. He’d managed the careers of many famous boxers, including Patterson and Jose Torres, and he saw Tyson’s potential as a challenger right away, telling him, “If you want to sit here and listen, you might be the world heavyweight champion someday.”
D’Amato and Tyson had a friendship that was more than just that of a professional trainer and a boxer; it was also that of a father and son. Tyson was taken under D’Amato’s wing, and when he was released from Tryon in September 1980, he moved into D’Amato’s full-time custody. D’Amato placed the young athlete on a strict training regimen, sending him to Catskill High School during the day and to the ring every evening. To teach Tyson how to deal with older rivals, D’Amato entered him in amateur boxing matches and “smokers,” or non-sanctioned fights.
Tyson’s life seemed to be on the rebound in 1982, but he endured a series of personal setbacks. Tyson’s mother died of cancer that year. He later told reporters, “I never saw my mother happy with me and proud of me for doing anything.” “She just saw me as a troubled adolescent who ran the streets and returned home with new clothes that she knew I didn’t pay for. I never had the opportunity to chat with her or hear more about her. It has no impact professionally, but it is devastating emotionally and personally.” Tyson was expelled from Catskill High School at the same time for his erratic and sometimes aggressive acts. While training for the 1984 Olympic trials, Tyson continued his education through private tutors.
