Michel Houellebecq Biography

Michael Houellebecq was born on the French island of Reunion on 26 February 1958. For an odd reason, his parent did not have an interest in his son. So when he was only five months old, they left him to live with his mother’s grandmother. He was sent to his father’s grandparents at the age of six and took care of him in every way.

He studied at Meaux High School, then in Paris at the Lycée Chaptal. He later enrolled in the “elite schools” of the French Grandes schools. In 1975, he attended the Paris-Grignon National Agricultural Institute. Houellebecq started to write poems and a literary review called Karamazov.

Houellebecq graduated as an agriculturalist in 1980. The same year he married, and the next year he had a son. But the marriage lasted only five years. Diplomas followed the divorce and Houellebecq had to stay in a rehabilitation psychiatrist facility. Unemployment made him all the worse. He finally got a job in the French National Assembly. His depression led to his poetry.

His first poem, ‘La Nouvelle Revue,’ was published in 1985.  His biography of ‘HP Lovecraft,’ a French horror writer named ‘against the world, against life’ was published in 1991. His fame began with his first 1994 novel ‘Extension du Domaine de la Lutte.’ His translation into English is called ‘Whatever.’

The ‘1998 Prix Novembre’ won the second novel ‘Les Particules Élémentaires’ as an instant ‘nihilistic classic.’ The “International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award” was also awarded to Michel Houellebecq in 2002.

A short fiction novel of Houellebecq called ‘Lanzarote’ was published in 2000. It explored different topics, including unconventional relations and religious leaders. His 2001 book “Plateforme” gave him a far-reaching reputation. The book tells the story of a 40, who is an administrator of arts. It contains several sex scenes and supports sex tourism and prostitution.

The novel openly criticized Islam, which led to many charges from different organizations, such as the Human Rights League (France) and the World Islamic League along with many mosques, being brought against Michel Houellebecq. Houellebecq was accused of provoking hate and religious discrimination.




The 2005 novel of Michel Houellebecq was ‘The Island Possibility,’ which was also adapted to film. In 2000, he also launched an album ‘Présence Humaine,’ in which he also sang rock band parts of his poetry. Many people called him “pop star of the single generation.” He published his novel ‘The Map and the Territory’ in 2010.

It was awarded the ‘Goncourt Award.’ His work was accused of being vulgar, obscene, racist, and islamophobic. He even said, “Islam was the dumbest of religions.” He was sued by many civil rights groups for hate speeches and hatred spread.

After being alleged to have started racial hatred, he moved for a few years to Ireland. He now resides with his second wife in Spain. His books are loved by the public and critics alike.
