Michael Palin Biography

On May 5, 1943, Palin was born in Broomhill, Sheffield, West Yorkshire, England. Mary Rachel Ovey and Edward Moreton Palin welcomed their second child, a boy, in June of 1982. As a child, his father was an engineer at a steel company.

Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Lockhart Ovey, his grandfather, served as Oxfordshire’s High Sheriff. He began his formal schooling at Sheffield’s Birkdale Preparatory School before moving on to Shrewsbury School. He has a strong relationship with his nine-year-old sister Angela.

During a vacation in Southwold, Suffolk, he met Helen Gibbins, the love of his life, and they were married in 1966. Three children and one grandchild are in the family of the couple.n In honor of Michael Palin’s accomplishments as a traveler, Virgin Trains has named its high-speed Super Voyager after him, while ‘National Express East Anglia’ has christened British Rail Class 153 after him.
