Michael Connelly Biography

Michael Connelly was born on 21 July 1956, in Philadelphia, PA. He relocated with his family to Florida when he was 12 years old. After reading the novels of Raymond Chandler while at the University of Florida, Michael wanted to become a writer.

Following graduation in 1980, Connelly spent most of his time working on the crime beat for newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. At the height of the murder and mayhem wave rolling across South Florida during the so-called “cocaine wars,” he wrote about police and crime in Fort Lauderdale.

In 1986, he and two other reporters interviewed survivors of a catastrophic aviation disaster for many months. They published a magazine piece on the accident and the survivors who were eventually shortlisted for feature writing in the Pulitzer Prize.

The magazine article also brought Connelly to the higher level of journalism, taking him to the city of his literary hero, Chandler, and as a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times.

Michael Connelly Career

Connelly originally intended to trace the footsteps of his father. As a result, he chose for a major in the University of Florida building. He found his grades plummeting, though. Raymond Chandler’s work The Last Goodbye movie adaption influenced his choice of major to journalism.

Michael Connelly began his career as a crime writer and journalist before he became a major break. The event of Delta Flight 191 had the media attention that day so he researched and published an article. He became a Pulitzer Prize finalist and took a position as a crime reporter from The Los Angeles Times.

The Black Echo launched his novel-writing career. The novel garnered excellent reviews from the reviewer and won the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Award for Best First Novel. The novel is based on a genuine occurrence but is also partly fictitious. The story now introduced Connelly to the renowned figure of LAPD detective Hieronymus Bosch, who bore similarities to his creator.




The protagonist’s name is inspired by a Netherlands painter, known for his works on the subject of sin and deliverance. Connelly also sees his work as a type of painting where figures move around and collide. Before starting to work on various projects, he wrote two more popular books in the Harry Bosch series Concrete Blonde (1994), and The Last Coyote (1995).

Connelly became an immediate hit when his subsequent works were published. The poet (1996) was called James McEvoy, a new protagonist. McEvoy is a crime reporter who investigates the suspected suicide of his brother.

The narrative of the first and third person is alternately used in the novel to change the attention from one character to another that gives the work a mysterious air.

The novel was awarded the Dilys Award in 1997. Connelly’s Blood Work (1998) debuts Terry McCaleb’s character as an FBI criminal agent profiler. McCaleb had a heart transplant and is trying to find the heart donor killer. The narrative was inspired by Connelly’s friend’s organ transplant.

The popularity of the novel led to his adaptation to a film by Clint Eastwood that was his lead. With The Lincoln Lawyer published in 2005, Connelly became a legal thriller.

Connelly has created more Harry Bosch and Jack McEvoy novels in the ensuing years. In addition to books, he created several shorts of crime fiction pieces, sometimes even reintroducing his renowned characters. He has been awarded several accolades, including the Anthony Award, the Grand Prix Award, and the Nero Award.

Connelly currently resides and continues to thrive in Florida.
