Melina Kanakaredes Biography

Melina Eleni Kanakaredes was born in Akron, Ohio, to Connie and Harry Kanakaredes on April 23, 1967. Her father was an insurance salesman, and her mother was the proprietor of a confectionery company. Christ Temo founded Temo’s Candy Company in Akron, which is now run by her two maternal uncles.

She was raised alongside her elder sisters, Cornelia and Aretta. As a second-generation Greek-American, she speaks Greek fluently. She graduated from Akron’s Firestone High School and briefly attended Ohio State University before transferring to Pittsburgh’s Point Park College. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre from there magna cum laude in 1989.

She competed in synchronized swimming while attending Ohio State University, a sport for which the university is famed.  They married on September 6, 1992, and received two daughters in 2000 and 2003, Zoe and Karina Eleni.

Prior to becoming a chef and restaurateur, her husband worked as a restaurant consultant. In Powell, Ohio, the couple opened the ‘Tria Greek Kuzina’ restaurant, which tragically closed later.

Melina Kanakaredes made her cinematic debut in 1994 with ‘Bleeding Hearts’ while still working on ‘Guiding Light’. She had numerous cameo appearances on television shows such as ‘Due South’ and ‘NYPD Blue’ the following year, and starred in the newspaper drama ‘New York News’.

She then appeared in minor roles in various films over the next few years, including ‘The Long Kiss Goodnight,’ ‘Rounders,’ and ‘Dangerous Beauty.’

She later appeared in television shows such as ‘Leaving Los Angeles,’ ‘The Practice,’ and ‘Oz.’ She starred in Anne Tyler’s 1991 novel ‘Saint Maybe’, which was adapted for television in 1998. She was cast as Dr. Sydney Hansen in the NBC sitcom ‘Providence’ in 1999, for which she received a TV Guide Award in 2000.




After portraying Robert De Niro’s character’s girlfriend in the 2001 criminal thriller ’15 Minutes,’ she was considered for the main part in ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding,’ which she was forced to decline owing to her pregnancy.

In May 2004, she made a guest appearance on ‘CSI: Miami as Detective Stella Bonasera, and later that year, her character was elevated to a series regular on ‘CSI: New York’.

After departing the series in 2010, she appears in the fantasy film ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief’ as the Greek Goddess Athena. She then participated in the 2013 film ‘Snitch’ opposite Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. In 2018, she was cast as Dr. Lane Hunter in the medical drama series ‘The Resident.’
