Mazie Hirono has served as the junior United States Senator from Hawaii. She’s a Democratic Party supporter. From 1981 to 1995, Hirono served in the Hawaii House of Representatives, and from 1994 to 2002, he was Hawaii’s ninth lieutenant governor, under Ben Cayetano. Mazie Hirono Politician Biography

Hirono is the first female senator from Hawaii, the first Asian-American woman in the Senate, the first senator born in Japan, and the first Buddhist senator in the United States. She is generally credited as being the first Buddhist to serve in the United States Congress, with Hank Johnson. She is also Hawaii’s third female representative in Congress.

Hirono ran for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Daniel Akaka’s retirement in 2012. Hirono won by a landslide, with 63 percent of the vote versus Lingle’s 37 percent. Vice President Joe Biden administered her oath on January 3, 2013. From 2013 to 2017, Hirono was the sole person of Asian heritage in the United States Senate, until senators Tammy Duckworth and Kamala Harris of Illinois and California, respectively, were sworn in.

Matabe, Mazie’s father, was an alcoholic and compulsive gambler who pawned even his wife’s belongings to fund his gambling habit. Mazie’s mother left the violent marriage in 1951 after being treated “like a slave” by her in-laws. Laura later explained why she made the choice she did: “My brother contributed funds to help my son get a school outfit.

My husband collected the money and left town, never to return. I began looking for him as the school year approached. I discovered he had used the money to purchase an overcoat for himself. In the spring, he didn’t need a coat. That was the point at which I made the decision to leave.” [4] Laura left the house, never to return, after informing her in-laws she was going to take her kids to school in her hometown. She and the kids returned to her parents’ house after selling their belongings to pay the train trip. According to Laura, “My husband never showed up; my parents were understanding and welcomed us all into their home. My mother made a financial contribution to our family. All it comes down to is love, I suppose.”

Hirono addressed on the Senate floor and voted against the so-called “skinny repeal” of the Affordable Care Act on July 28, 2017, two months after undergoing surgery for stage-four kidney cancer. Hirono’s speech was captured and broadcast on Twitter by MSNBC reporter Kyle Griffin.
