Marsha Blackburn Career

In 1973, Blackburn worked for the Times Mirror Company as a sales manager. She worked for Mercantile Stores, Inc.’s Castner Knott Division from 1975 until 1978. She founded Marketing Strategies, a marketing and event management agency, in 1978.

From 1989 to 1991, she was the head of the Williamson County Republican Party. She ran for Congress in 1992 and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention that year. She was defeated in her bid for a seat in Congress. Tennessee governor Don Sundquist named Blackburn as executive director of the Tennessee Film, Entertainment, and Music Commission in 1995, and he maintained the position until 1997.

She was elected to the Tennessee Senate in 1998, where she served until 2003, rising through the ranks to become minority whip. She was involved in the fight to stop the approval of a state income tax law in 2000.

Following the 2000 Census, Blackburn’s house was redistricted from the 6th to the 7th district. Bart Gordon, the Democratic incumbent congressman from Tennessee’s 6th District, had suffered three challenging elections in the 1990s, including a close loss in 1994, owing in part to the increasing Republican tendency in Nashville’s suburbs. This was particularly noticeable in Williamson County, the state’s wealthiest and most Republican county in the region.

The Democratic-controlled Tennessee General Assembly looked to seek to preserve Gordon by relocating Williamson County to the 7th District, which was already overwhelmingly Republican. The legislature transferred some of Clarksville’s more Democratic areas to the adjacent 8th district in order to preserve about equal district sizes and to compensate for the considerable rise in the 7th’s population due to the acquisition of Williamson County. This resulted in a region that spanned “in reptile form” for 200 miles from eastern Memphis to southwest Nashville, according to Memphis Magazine.

In 2002, incumbent congressman Ed Bryant of the 7th District chose to compete for the Senate seat left by Fred Thompson. The true fight in this Republican stronghold was Blackburn’s entry into the race to succeed Bryant. She was the lone candidate from the Nashville suburbs among the four primary contenders. The conservative Club for Growth supports Blackburn. In that district, the three Memphians divided the vote, allowing her to win the primary by over 20 points.

Bill Haslam, the governor of Tennessee, declined to run for the Senate seat vacated by Bob Corker in October 2017. Blackburn launched her bid for the seat shortly after.

On November 6, 2018, she defeated former Democratic Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen to become the first woman elected to the United States Senate from Tennessee. When Lamar Alexander departed from the Senate in January 2021, Blackburn became the state’s senior senator. She is their state’s senior senator and the most junior Republican. Blackburn was a member of the Tea Party movement and has been labelled as a fervent conservative and Trump supporter.
