Mark Warner (Politician) Biography
Mark Warner was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the United States on December 15, 1954. Marjorie and Robert F. Warner are his parents. Lisa, his younger sister, is his only sibling. He was born in Illinois and then moved to Vernon, Connecticut, where he attended Rockville High Institution, a public secondary school.
Warner earned his Bachelor of Arts in political science from George Washington University (GWU) in 1977, graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA and being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from GWU as valedictorian of his class and was the first in his family to attend college. Warner was later inducted as an alumni member of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, at GWU in 1995.
He worked on Capitol Hill to pay for his tuition while at GWU, riding his bike to the office of U.S. Senator Abraham Ribicoff in the early mornings (D-CT). Warner took a break from school during his sophomore year to work as the youth organiser for Ella Grasso’s winning governor campaign in Connecticut. When he returned to Washington, Warner got a part-time position in Representative Chris Dodd’s office. During his freshman year of law school, he worked as Dodd’s senatorial campaign manager.
Warner earned a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School in 1980 and went on to coach the law school’s first intramural women’s basketball team. From 1980 to 1982, Warner worked as a fundraiser for the Democratic Party in Atlanta. Warner has never been a lawyer.
Lisa Collis is Warner’s wife. Warner felt ill while on their honeymoon in Egypt and Greece in 1989, and doctors revealed he had a near-fatal burst appendix when he returned home. Warner was in the hospital for two months recovering from his sickness. Collis was the first Virginia first lady to use her birth name while her husband was governor. Collis and Warner have three daughters.

Mark Warner Career
Mark Warner tried and failed to start two enterprises before working as a general contractor for cellular companies and investors. He helped start or was an early investor in a number of technology businesses, notably Nextel, as the founder and managing director of Columbia Capital, a venture capital firm. He co-founded Capital Cellular Corporation and amassed a net worth of more than $200 million as a result of his efforts. He was the wealthiest Senator in the United States as of 2012.
Warner was widely assumed to be preparing to run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, and had “done everything but announce his candidacy” until abruptly announcing his decision not to run in October 2006, citing family considerations. On September 13, 2007, Warner announced that he would compete for the United States Senate seat being vacated by retiring Senator John Warner (no relation) in 2008. John Warner endorsed him, which helped him win by more than 30 points.
On the second day of the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, Warner delivers the keynote address. The majority of national Democrats promptly endorsed Warner. For for the entire campaign, he had a large lead over his Republican opponent, fellow former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore (Warner’s predecessor). At the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Warner gave the keynote address.
Warner led Gilmore by 30 points in a Washington Post/ABC News poll taken on September 24, 2008. Warner beat Gilmore in November, receiving 65 percent of the vote to Gilmore’s 34 percent. Warner won every county in the state save four: Rockingham, Augusta, Powhatan, and Hanover. In many cases, he won by large margins in normally Republican-leaning areas of the state. Since Chuck Robb received 72 percent of the vote in 1988, this was the most lopsided margin in a contested Senate race in Virginia. For the first time since Harry Byrd, Jr. left the Democrats to become an independent in 1970, Virginia now has two Democratic senators thanks to Warner’s triumph.
He serves as the honorary chairman of the Forward Together Political Action Committee. At the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Warner gave the keynote address. Apart from politics, Warner is most known for co-founding Columbia Capital, a telecommunications-related venture capital firm in the 1980s.
Warner was widely expected to seek for the Democratic presidential nomination in the 2008 U.S. presidential election in 2006, but he announced his decision in October 2006, claiming a wish to avoid disrupting his family life. Warner was considered a possible vice presidential candidate until he withdrew his name from contention after winning the Democratic Senate primary.
Warner won his first election to the Senate in 2008 with 65 percent of the vote, defeating his gubernatorial predecessor, Jim Gilmore. In 2014, he narrowly defeated Ed Gillespie for reelection, and in 2020, he defeated Republican nominee Daniel Gade.
