Mariska Magdolna Hargitay is the daughter of Jayne Mansfield, a former actress, and Mickey Hargitay, a former Mr. Universe who is of Hungarian origin.Her parents divorced in 1963, but their marriage was later declared null and void. Jayne Mansfield, Hargitay’s mother, was murdered in an automobile accident with her boyfriend, Sam Brody, four years later. Hargitay and her siblings were reared by her father and his third wife, Ellen Siano after their mother died.

She attended Marymount High School, where she participated in theatre, cheerleading, and student government. She had a passion for acting since she was a child and opted to join UCLA’s theatre program after graduating from high school in 1982. She opted to follow in her father’s footsteps and was crowned Miss Beverly Hills USA in 1982. She already had a personal agency by the time she enrolled at UCLA’s School of Theatre, Film, and Television, and she had a number of little parts under her belt.
