Lindsey Graham was born in the United States on July 9, 1955, in Central, South Carolina. Millie and Florence James “F.J.” are his parents’ names. His ancestors were from a Scots-Irish family. Graham entered the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps after graduating from D. W. Daniel High School, becoming the first member of his family to attend college.
His mother died of Hodgkin’s cancer when he was 21, and his father died of a heart attack 15 months later when he was 69. Graham was able to attend the University of South Carolina in Columbia because his then-13-year-old sister was orphaned, and the service allowed him to stay close to home as his sister’s legal guardian. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi social fraternity during his studies.
He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.A. in psychology in 1977 and a J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1981. Graham is single.

Lindsey Graham Career
He is a native of Central, South Carolina, earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1981. From 1982 until 1988, he served in the United States Air Force’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps, first as a defence attorney and then as the Air Force’s top prosecutor in Europe, based in West Germany. Later in his career, he served as a member of the United States Air Force Reserve throughout his congressional stint. He was promoted to Colonel in 2014 after being awarded the Bronze Star Medal for valorous service.
Graham was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps in 1982, following his graduation from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He entered active service the following year. He began his career as an Air Force defence attorney before being sent to Rhein-Main Air Base in Frankfurt, Germany, where he served as the Air Force’s European chief prosecutor from 1984 to 1988.
In 1984, he appeared on an episode of 60 Minutes, defending an Air Force pilot accused of marijuana use while highlighting the Air Force’s poor drug-testing standards. He returned to South Carolina following his time in Europe, retiring from the military in 1989 and establishing a private legal practise. He served as an assistant county attorney in Oconee County from 1988 to 1992 and as a city attorney in Central from 1990 to 1994.
Graham was one of 18 House Republicans who co-sponsored a resolution by Bob Barr in November 1997 that attempted to open an impeachment investigation into President Bill Clinton. There were no accusations or allegations included in the resolution. This was an early attempt to impeach Clinton before the Clinton–Lewinsky affair erupted.
In 2020, he was re-elected to a fourth term. Graham is well-known in the Senate for his support for robust national defenses and robust foreign policy action. Initially, he was recognised for his willingness to work with Democrats on bipartisan topics like campaign finance reform, a prohibition on waterboarding, immigration reform, and judicial nominations. He has slammed the Tea Party and advocated for a more inclusive Republican Party.
Graham ran for President of the United States between June and December 2015 but dropped out before the Republican primaries in 2016.
He was a vocal opponent of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, constantly stating that he did not support Trump in particular. He was particularly offended by Trump’s remarks against Graham’s close friend, Senator John McCain. Graham became an ardent friend of Trump after meeting with him in March 2017, frequently giving public remarks in his favour.
Both parties were taken aback by his change of heart, which fuelled media conjecture. In 2019, he was elected chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Graham presided over Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court confirmation proceedings, which she won in October 2020.
