On January 17, 1971, Lil Jon was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up in Georgia and attended Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta. He worked as a DJ in Atlanta nightclubs and for So So Def Recordings from 1993 and 2000.

Lil Jon married Nicole Smith in 2004. Nathan Smith, the couple’s son, was born in 1998. He is an avid fan of the popular television show ‘The Walking Dead’ and has appeared as a guest on ‘Talking Dead’.

Jonathan Smith began his career as Lil Jon. With rappers Big Sam and Lil Bo, he founded the musical group Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz. Their debut album, ‘Get Crunk, Who U Wit: Da Album’, was released in 1997. Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz released the singles ‘Who U Wit?’ and ‘Shawty Freak a Lil’ Sumthin” in 1998.

Both singles received widespread praise from their fans and peaked at no. 70 and 62 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts, respectively.

Jon founded his own label, BME Recordings, in 2000. Additionally, he inked a distribution agreement with Southern Music Distribution of Norcross, Georgia. Jon launched his chart-topping album ‘We Still Crunk!’ in 2000. The album featured numerous chart-topping songs, including ‘I Like Those Girls’.

The record peaked at number 55 on the R&B chart and also reached number three on the Hot Rap Tracks list. Jon achieved recognition and success through his music and was much discussed. Bryan Leach, A&R at TVT, was in attendance at Lil Jon’s Atlanta shows and was blown away by his performance.

He admired Jon’s boundless energy throughout his performance. Leach stated in the Hit Quarters that it is the band’s intensity that makes crunk music so popular.

Jon paired up with The East Side Boyz and signed to TVT Records in 2001. They made their debut with the album ‘Put Yo Hood Up,’ which included previously released tunes.

The group released the tune ‘Bia Bia’ and performed across the country, alongside Ludacris, Too Short, Big Kapp, and Chyna Whyte. ‘Bia Bia’ was a critical success, peaking at #97 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #47 on the Billboard R&B chart. The trio released the album ‘Kings of Crunk’ in 2002.

Their debut single, ‘I Don’t Give A…,’ featured Mystikal and Krayzie Bone and peaked at number 50 on the R&B charts.

The trio collaborated with fellow Atlanta hip hop group Ying Yang Twins on their first hit, ‘Get Low.’ The song peaked at number ten on the Hot 100 and was a smash hit in nightclubs around the country.

In 2004, the trio released their fifth studio album, ‘Crunk Juice,’ which included the single “What U Gon’ Do,” which peaked at number 22 on the Hot 100, number 13 on the R&B chart, and number 5 on the rap chart. The following single from the album was “Lovers & Friends,” which featured Usher and Ludacris. It peaked at #3 on the Hot 100, #2 on R&B, and #1 on rap.
