Lauren Bacall Biography
Lauren Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske on September 16th, 1924 in New York City, United States. She and her mother adopted her grandmother’s maiden name of Bacal and added the second “l” when William, her alcoholic father, left the family when Bacall was six.
Bacall grew up enamored with the theatre and began working as an usher while still in high school. She then went on to appear in many plays both on and off-Broadway. Nancy Hawks, the Hollywood director Howard Hawks’ wife, first saw her modeling work when she appeared on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar in 1943.
Hawks put Bacall through her paces when Nancy persuaded her to do so. Once in Hollywood, Hawks had her speak in a lower range and adopt the name Lauren to hide her Jewish background. She was persuaded to do all of this by Hawks. As a result, Bacall had a hard time getting used to the moniker by which she was better known.
Bogart, who was 25 years her senior, and Bacall quickly became romantically involved. Bogart was married at the time and divorced his wife after a few months of wrangling. On the 21st of May, 1945, Bacall and Bogart exchanged vows in Ohio.
It was a pleasant marriage for the most part, but it put a stop to Bacall’s career. She explains, “I believe many filmmakers just thought of me as Bogie’s wife. “That doesn’t bode well for a future career, and I certainly didn’t put up much of a fight in pursuit of one. So I suppose you have some success and some failure. It was a conscious decision.”
Lauren Bacall only appeared in a handful of films when she was married to Humphrey Bogart. Two of their children were born while they were married: Stephen and Leslie. They co-starred in three additional films: The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947), and Key Largo (1948).
In 1953, she co-starred with Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe in the comedy How to Marry a Millionaire, in which Bacall played a sophisticated con artist.
Bogart passed away in 1957 from lung cancer. Bacall was in a state of disarray when the incident occurred. When her relationship with Frank Sinatra ended in divorce, Bacall returned to the theatre, her first passion, after a brief and unsuccessful courtship.
When she took the stage, she recalls, she “finally felt like I came into my own.” Two comedies on Broadway followed in the following years: Goodbye, Charlie (1959) and Cactus Flower (1960).

Lauren Bacall Career
Lauren Bacall made her film debut at the age of 19 in Humphrey Bogart’s 1944 film To Have and Have Not. Bacall’s signature gesture, “The Look,” was born on the set of the picture. Oddly, Bacall’s skyward look originated as a way to combat her nerves: she had to keep her chin pushed against her chest until the cameras started rolling to prevent it from trembling.
Bacall’s career as a leading woman in the noir genre took off thanks to the film. Although her role in the 1945 picture Confidential Agent received mixed reviews, it only served to propel her career forward.
Bacall soon returned her attention to her private life. In 1961, she was remarried to Jason Robards Jr., who was her third husband. Sam, the couple’s first child, was born quite quickly. Bacall appeared in a small number of films with her second husband.
Immediately after her divorce from Robards in 1969, Bacall was asked to be in the new Broadway musical Applause, which was based on the 1950 film All About Eve. She accepted.
In spite of her inability to sing, Bacall accepted the job and made her acting debut as a fictional version of the real-life actress Margo Channing in the spring of 1970. It’s safe to say that Bacall was a huge hit, and she even won a Tony Award for her efforts.
While appearing as a Broadway star in the big-screen thriller The Fan, she earned her second Tony Award for her semi-autobiographical performance in 1981’s play Woman of the Year.
When Bacall passed away, she’d had a complete life as an actress, having worked in Hollywood and gained acclaim for her work both onscreen and off. Bacall released her first memoir, By Myself, in 1978, and a sequel, Now, in 1994, both of which were nominated for the National Book Award.
In spite of some of the subjects being considered controversial at the time, both volumes freely addressed her personal struggles, including the alcoholism of both her husbands.
