David was born on July 2, 1947, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City’s Sheepshead Bay neighborhood. His parents are a men’s clothes designer, Rose and Mortimer Julius “Morty” David, and he has an older brother called Ken.

David is from a Jewish family. During the 19th century, his father’s family immigrated from Germany to the United States, while David’s mother was born into a Polish-Jewish family in Ternopil, Ukraine. David received a bachelor’s degree in history from Sheepshead Bay High School and the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was a brother in Tau Epsilon Phi in the 1960s. David began to cultivate his distinctive outlook while in college, and he found that just by being himself, he could make people laugh. David enlisted in the United States Army Reserve after graduating from college.

During the early 1970s, he began taking acting lessons in Manhattan. He held a number of jobs to cover his bills while performing as a stand-up comic. For a brief time, he worked as a retailer. After that, he worked as a legal clerk. He worked as a taxi driver as well. In 1974, he gave his first stand-up comedy appearance at Folk City in Greenwich Village. He worked as a scriptwriter and actress on ‘Fridays,’ the American Broadcasting Company’s (ABC) weekly late-night live comedy show, from 1979 to 1982.

He resumed his career as a stand-up comic after finishing this program. He wrote the screenplay for the television film “Norman’s Corner” in 1987. In the same year, he also wrote an episode of the American sitcom “The Gary Shandling Show.”

He co-created an episode of ‘Seinfeld,’ an American television series, with Jerry Seinfeld, a New York-based comedian, in 1989. He appeared in the comedy film “Radio Days,” directed by Woody Allen, which was released in 1987. He also appeared in ‘New York Stories’ in 1989.
