The son of a TV writer, who was the son of a TV writer himself, and a high school teacher who was also a feminist activist, Whedon was raised in Manhattan. After graduating high school, including a short stay at an elite boarding school in England, Whedon enrolled at Wesleyan University in Connecticut in the film studies program.
He graduated in 1987 and moved to Los Angeles soon afterwards to attempt to break into the film industry. His pitches struggled to gain interest, and he managed to get some work in the “family business” of television writing, although he was initially resistant to the idea, becoming a staff writer for the successful sitcom Roseanne in 1989.
Whedon started to pitch his script during this time for the film Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a horror comedy about a teenage cheerleader who learns that being a superhuman protector of civilization is her destiny. In the early 1990s, it was eventually picked up for production and was released in 1992 with Kristy Swanson and Donald Sutherland starring.
