Joseph Martin was born in London, England, on May 16, 1981, as the eldest child of painter Nick Martin and Sarah.

He has a sister named Crystal and a brother named Jack. He spent his early years in Morriston, Swansea. He attended Cwmrhydyceirw’s ‘Morriston Comprehensive School’.

Following that, he attended ‘Gorseinon College’ (now known as ‘Gower College Swansea’), where he enrolled in a BTEC Performing Arts study.

He returned to London in his late teens to pursue acting, enrolling in the ‘Central School of Speech and Drama,’ a part of the ‘University of London.

He met American actress Persia White while filming ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ in which she played Bonnie’s mother in a recurring role.
