He was born in the United States of America on February 4, 1970, in Highland Park, Illinois. Susan and Allen Gray are his parents, and they live in Highland Park. His father was an investment consultant and the owner of a small auto parts factory on Chicago’s West Side. His mother remarried and operated a catering company with his stepfather James Florsheim.

Gray earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in 1992, graduating magna cum laude from the School of Arts & Sciences. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Wharton School as well. He was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honour society.
