Jonathan Franzen Biography

Franzen was born in West Springs, Illinois, USA, on August 17, 1959. Franzen was born in the St. Louis neighborhood of Webster Groves, Missouri, and subsequently at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. Following a B.A. in 1981, he studied as a Fulbright Fellow at Berlin Free University.

After returning to America, he started writing his first novel every day for eight hours. He worked as a research assistant in tracing seismic activity throughout the globe on weekends at Harvard University to earn money.

Franzen had married Valerie Cornell at the beginning of the twenties. They were living and married in New York City for 14 years. In some of his writings in the Farther Away collection, he mentions his marriage and divorce. With his spouse equivalent, writer Kathy Chetkovich, Franzen lives in Santa Cruz, California.

Franzen prefers freely to express ideas; opinions on all things – from the way people live to social networking sites. It’s not anti-technology, however. Some of the advantages and conveniences offered by technology make him quite excited. But he insists that the technology moves too quickly and that it has altered before it can catch up. The saddest thing is that people don’t even grant him the chance to lament the rapid changes he is fighting for. He says technology and electronics have distanced individuals and left the environment around them very indifferent.
