Jon Tester was born in the Montana town of Havre. Helen Marie and David O. Tester are his parents. His father was of English heritage, while his mother was Swedish. Tester grew raised on acreage that his grandfather homesteaded in 1912 in Chouteau County, near Big Sandy, Montana. He lost the middle three fingers of his left hand in a meat-grinder accident when he was nine years old. He earned a B.A. in music from the University of Providence, formerly the College of Great Falls, in 1978.
Tester then returned to his family’s farm and custom butcher shop after two years as a music teacher in the Big Sandy School District. He and his wife continue to run the farm, which they converted from conventional to organic in the 1980s. Tester served on the Big Sandy Soil Conservation Service (SCS) Committee and the Chouteau County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) Committee for five years and was also chairman of the Big Sandy School Board of Trustees.

Jon Tester Career
After his neighbour, a Republican State Senator, chose not to seek for reelection, Tester was elected to the Montana Senate to represent the 45th district in 1998. Tester was on the Big Sandy school board for a decade before running for State Senate. For the 2001 session, he was chosen minority whip. He was re-elected with 71 percent of the vote in 2002, and in 2003, he became the minority leader. Tester was elected president of the Montana Senate in 2005, making him the upper chamber’s primary presiding officer.
In May 2005, Tester declared his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican Senator Conrad Burns. After state auditor John Morrison, Tester was the second Democrat to enter the contest. While Tester had a stronger following among his colleagues, his opponent, whose grandfather was Nebraska’s governor, was able to raise considerably more money and had a stronger statewide name recognition.
Tester formerly served as the president of the Montana Senate and had positions as a music teacher and farmer. Following the resignation of Max Baucus, he became Montana’s senior senator in 2014 and is the dean of the state’s congressional delegation. He has been the sole member of the Democratic Party to occupy statewide office in Montana since January 4, 2021.
