In the 2017 special election for Georgia’s 6th congressional district, Ossoff was the Democratic nominee, which had long been considered a Republican stronghold. The extraordinary election was fiercely contested. It drew widespread attention and ended as being the most expensive House election in American history. In mid-2020, Ossoff earned the Democratic Party’s candidacy for the 2020 U.S. Senate race in Georgia, where he would face Republican incumbent David Perdue. On November 3, neither candidate received a majority of the vote, triggering a runoff election on January 5, 2021, which Ossoff won. Ossoff is an advocate for the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). Three principles guide his health-care policy: “To begin with, no American should suffer or die from a disease that is avoidable or treatable. Two, no one should be bankrupt due to illness. Finally, no company should go out of business or fire employees because they can’t afford to pay their health insurance rates.”

He opposes efforts to implement a single-payer health-care system like Medicare for All. He voted against the American Health Care Act, a House Republican bill that would have repealed the Affordable Care Act, in both its March and May 2017 iterations. He claimed that the May 2017 version was worse than the previous one because it “protects people with preexisting conditions even less.”
