Jonathan Bernthal was born in Washington, D.C., USA, on September 20, 1976, into a Jewish family. Eric Lawrence “Rick” Bernthal is his father, and Joan Lurie is his mother.

Bernthal attended Skidmore College in upstate New York but left midway through to pursue a course in theatre art at Russia’s Moscow Art Theatre. He played semi-professional baseball as a catcher in Moscow.

Bernthal returned to the United States to enroll in a course at Cambridge’s American Repertory Theater. He graduated in 2002 as a non-degree student and thereafter pursued a career in theatre.

Jonathan Bernthal married Erin Angle in 2010 and the couple currently has two sons and a daughter. Henry and Billy are his sons, while Adeline is his daughter. Erin is Kurt Angle’s niece.

Kurt Angle is a well-known professional wrestler. Bernthal’s cousin is Adam Schlesinger, a bass player with the Fountains of Wayne band. Thomas Bernthal, one of Bernthal’s brothers, is a three-time Emmy Award winner and former NBC producer.

Jonathan Bernthal’s acting career began with stage productions. Since he began his professional acting career in 2002, he has been in approximately 30 plays.

In the same year, he appeared in an episode of ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent as Lane Ruddock.

His film debut was in 2002 with Mary/Mary, in which he played Manny. Bernthal’s depiction as Donnie Pitron in the 2008 film ‘Bar Starz’ earned him widespread acclaim and gained him prominent parts in notable films and television series.

He began his career in episodic appearances on television programs and films until landing a huge role as Al Capone in 2009’s ‘Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian’.

To date, his most notable film role is in 2013’s ‘The Wolf of Wallstreet’. Bernthal’s most successful television job came in 2010 when he began portraying Shane Walsh on ‘The Walking Dead.’ He was a series regular until 2012 when his character was killed off.

Bernthal was cast as Frank Castle / The Punisher in the second season of ‘Daredevil,’ a Netflix superhero series. He will resume his role as The Punisher in another Netflix series.

In 2017, he worked on Taylor Sheridan’s directorial debut, ‘Wind River,’ and Edgar Wright’s ‘Baby Driver.’ ‘Wind River’ gained widespread acclaim at its 2017 Sundance Film Festival premiere.

He also worked on the Irish action film ‘Pilgrimage,’ which starred Tom Holland and Richard Armitage. His subsequent flicks, ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon and ‘Widows,’ are in post-production. These films are scheduled to be released in 2018.
