Johnny Weir was born in the United States on July 2, 1984, in Coatesville. John Weir, a nuclear power plant engineer, and Patti Weir, a nuclear power plant worker, and home inspector, are his parents. His father was an English saddle event competitor.

He was also a skilled competitor, having won many equestrian events before the age of nine and competing in the Devon Horse Show with his Shetland pony, Shadow. His family relocated to New Britain, Connecticut, so that he could continue his education. Johnny Weir started his professional career in 1996 after being inspired by former skater Oksana Baiul’s 1994 Olympic gold medal. Weir won first place in the South Atlantic Regionals as a junior in his first year of skating (1997).
