John Thune (Politician) Biography
John Thune was born in the United States on January 7, 1961, in Pierre, South Dakota. Yvonne Patricia and Harold Richard Thune are his parents. During World War II, Harold Thune flew the Grumman F6F Hellcat as a fighter pilot in the Pacific theatre. Harold Thune’s missions were launched from the USS Intrepid.
Nicholas Thune, Thune’s paternal grandfather, was a Norwegian immigrant who founded Thune Hardware shops in Mitchell and Murdo, South Dakota, with his brother Matt. Thune was born in Saskatchewan, while his maternal grandpa came from Ontario, Canada. Richard Thune, Thune’s brother, teaches English at Rowland High School in California.
In high school, Thune was a standout athlete who competed in basketball, track, and football. In 1979, he graduated from Jones County High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business from Biola University in California, where he played collegiate basketball. Thune graduated from the University of South Dakota with a Master of Business Administration degree in 1984.
Thune started interested in politics after getting his MBA. From 1985 to 1987, he served as a legislative staffer for US Senator James Abdnor. Senator George McGovern of the United States was defeated by Abdnor in 1980.

John Thune Career
For two years, he was the executive director of the state Republican Party. Governor George S. Mickelson appointed Thune to the position of Railroad Director of South Dakota, which he held from 1991 to 1993. He was the executive director of the South Dakota Municipal League from 1993 to 1996.
Thune was one of 26 senators who voted against ratifying New START, a nuclear arms reduction treaty between the United States and the Russian Federation that requires both countries to deploy no more than 1,550 strategic warheads and 700 launchers over the next seven years and allows for the continuation of on-site inspections that were halted when START I expired the previous year. It was Russia’s first weapons accord in eight years.
Thune and Chuck Grassley asked US Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner to review the Chinese company Wanxiang Group’s plan to buy bankrupt battery maker A123 in November 2012, arguing that the transaction should be reviewed by the Geithner-led Committee on Foreign Investment to ensure that US military and taxpayer interests in A123 were protected.
Thune co-sponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act (s. 720) in June 2017, which made it a federal crime for Americans to encourage or participate in boycotts against Israel and Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories if protesting Israeli government actions, punishable by a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Thune voted in March 2018 to table a resolution championed by Bernie Sanders, Chris Murphy, and Mike Lee that would have ordered President Trump to remove American soldiers from Yemen within 30 days.
After Tim Johnson’s retirement in 2015, Thune became South Dakota’s senior U.S. Senator. He is the dean of the delegation from South Dakota in Congress. Thune was chosen as Majority Whip for the 116th Congress by the Senate Republican Conference, succeeding Senator John Cornyn of Texas, who was term-limited in the role. In the 117th Congress, he is the Minority Whip.
