John F. Kennedy (Politician) Biography

Kennedy, who was born in Centerville, Mississippi, attended Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia School of Law before enrolling in Oxford’s Magdalen College. Prior to campaigning for state attorney general in 1991, he worked on Governor Buddy Roemer’s administration. He was first elected to the position of Louisiana State Treasurer in 1999, and was re-elected in 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015. In 2004 and 2008, Kennedy ran for the United States Senate but was unsuccessful. He became a Republican in 2007 after switching parties.

Kennedy campaigned for the Senate again in 2016 after U.S. Senator David Vitter decided not to seek reelection. In the November nonpartisan blanket primary, he came in top, and in the December runoff, he defeated Democrat Foster Campbell 61–39 percent. On January 3, 2017, he received his oath of office. Kennedy worked as a partner at Chaffe McCall, a New Orleans legal firm. From 2002 until 2016, he worked as an adjunct professor at the Paul M.The US Chamber of Commerce, the National Federation of Independent Businesses, the National Rifle Association, the National Right to Life Committee, the American Conservative Union, Vice President-elect Mike Pence, and President-elect Donald Trump all endorsed Kennedy’s Senate candidacy.

Kennedy, who had backed Vitter for governor the year before, won the jungle primary and went on to face Democrat Foster Campbell in a runoff election on December 10th.

The day before the runoff, President-elect Donald Trump campaigned for Kennedy, who had garnered Kennedy’s support in the 2016 presidential election. Kennedy won 536,204 votes (61%) to 347,813 votes (41%) in the election (39 percent ). He lost the most populated parishes, including Orleans and East Baton Rouge, where he was raised, but he ran away with Bossier Parish, Campbell’s home parish.

In a hearing before the Appropriations subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies in June 2017, Kennedy “interrogated” Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

“Now I can go down to my overpriced Capitol Hill grocery this afternoon and choose among about six different types of mayonnaise,” he said, drawing a comparison between the lack of school choice available for younger students in many rural areas of the country and the widespread brands of mayonnaise available on the grocery store shelf.

Why am I unable to do so for my child?” Kennedy was the one who initiated the conversation. The remark drew a lot of attention from around the country. DeVos said that the Trump administration’s budget proposal will provide parents and kids more authority and opportunities, making American education “the pride of the world” once more.

In April 2018, Kennedy was one of eight Republican senators who signed a letter to US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Acting Secretary of State John Sullivan expressing “deep concern” about a UN report exposing “North Korean sanctions evasion involving Russia and China,” and asserting that the findings “demonstrate an elaborate and alarming military-venture bet.”

Kennedy was assigned to Motor Torpedo Squadron TWO in April 1943, and on April 24, he gained command of PT-109, which was located on Tulagi Island in the Solomon Islands at the time. PT-109 was on its 31st mission, along with fourteen other PTs, to block or repel four Japanese destroyers and floatplanes carrying food, supplies, and 900 Japanese soldiers to the Vila Plantation garrison on the southern tip of the Solomon’s Kolombangara Island, in support of the New Georgia campaign.

The arrival of the massive Japanese naval force that would pass on the evening of August 1 had been predicted by intelligence given to Kennedy’s Commander Thomas G. Warfield. Eight of the American PTs fired 24 torpedoes that night, but none of them struck the Japanese convoy.

On that dark and moonless night, about 2:00 a.m., Kennedy saw a Japanese destroyer heading north on its way back from the base of Kolombangara and attempted to turn to attack. However, the destroyer Amagiri struck PT-109 at an angle and sliced it in half, killing two PT-109 crew members.
