Joe Manchin is an American politician who has served as the senior United States senator representing the state of West Virginia since 2010. He was the Democratic Party’s 34th governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010, as well as the state’s 27th secretary of state from 2001 to 2005.

Joe Manchin was born on August 24, 1947, in Farmington, West Virginia, a tiny coal mining town, to Mary O. and John Manchin, the second of five children. The term “Manchin” comes from the Italian word “Mancini.” His maternal grandparents were Czechoslovak immigrants, while his father was of Italian origin. He’s a member of the Welsh Friends Caucus.

Manchin’s grandpa, Joseph Manchin, had a grocery shop, and his father operated a carpet and furniture company. Both his father and grandfather were mayors of Farmington. A.J. Manchin, his uncle, was a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates and afterwards the Secretary of State and Treasurer of the state.

In 1965, Manchin graduated from Farmington High School. In 1965, he was awarded a football scholarship to West Virginia University, but his football career was cut short due to an injury sustained during practise. Manchin earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1970 and began to work for his family’s company. Since infancy, Manchin has been a personal buddy of Alabama Crimson Tide football coach Nick Saban.

At the age of 35, Manchin was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates, and then to the West Virginia Senate in 1986, where he served until 1996. In 1996, he ran for governor but lost to Charlotte Pritt in the Democratic primary. In the year 2000, he was elected Secretary of State of West Virginia.

In 2003, Manchin declared his desire to run against incumbent Democratic Governor Bob Wise in the Democratic primary for Governor of West Virginia in 2004. After a controversy, Wise opted not to run for reelection, and Manchin easily won the Democratic primary and general election. For the first time since 1964, a West Virginia governor was followed by another from the same political party.

With 54 percent of the vote, Manchin won a special election in 2010 to replace the Senate seat vacated by incumbent Democrat Robert Byrd’s death. He was elected to a full term with 61 percent of the vote in 2012 and again with just under 50 percent of the vote in 2018, as the state became more politicised. When Jay Rockefeller retired in 2015, he became the state’s senior U.S. Senator.

Manchin is recognised for his advocacy of bipartisanship in Congress, voting or cooperating with Republicans on topics like abortion and gun ownership. Manchin, on the other hand, has voted against repealing the Affordable Care Act on many occasions, voted to keep funding for Planned Parenthood in 2017, and voted against the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. He has urged for the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan on several occasions and has opposed most military actions in Syria.

Manchin is the lone Democrat in West Virginia’s statewide office, as well as the sole Democrat in the state’s congressional delegation, as of 2021.
