Jessica Lange Biography

Jessica Phyllis Lange was born in Cloquet, Minnesota on April 20, 1949.  Ann and Jane are her older sisters, and George is her younger brother. She graduated from Cloquet High School and then attended the University of Minnesota to study art and photography.

She later studied mime theatre and became a dancer with the opera group Opéra-Comique. From 1971 to 1981, Jessica Lange was married to Spanish photographer Paco Grande.

Lange was in a love relationship with ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov from 1976 till 1982. Prior to their divorce, the couple had a daughter, Aleksandra “Shura” Baryshnikov. Following this, she began dating American playwright Sam Shepard.

The couple co-parented two children, Hannah Jane and Samuel Walker, until 2009. The actress fostered a disabled child in the early 1990s. Though Lange is not religious, she adheres to certain precepts of Buddhism.

Jessica Lange began her modeling career at the Wilhelmina modeling agency. She quickly moved into acting and made her feature picture debut in 1976’s ‘King Kong’. Following this, she was cast as the Angel of Death in ‘All That Jazz,’ a semi-autobiographical film.

In 1980, she starred opposite Susan Saint James and Jane Curtin in the film ‘How to Beat the High Cost of Living.’ She was then offered the starring role in the film ‘The Postman Always Rings Twice’ a year later.
