Jessica Capshaw was born to Robert and Kate Capshaw on 9 August 1976 in Columbia, Missouri. Her parents were also MU students. While her father had a variety of positions, including sales manager, marketing director, business executive, and high school principal, her mother gravitated toward acting.

As a result, the family relocated to New York City, where Kate pursued modeling and subsequently acting careers.

Jessica’s parents split when she was a child of fewer than four years. In 1994, Kate Capshaw married Steven Spielberg, who adopted Jessica as a stepdaughter. Jessica is one of ten children in the family, both biological and adoptive.
