James Lee Burke Biography

Born in 1936 in Houston, Texas, James Lee Burke went on to live on the coasts of Texas and Louisiana. He was awarded the B.A. Degree and an M.A. from the University of Missouri, respectively, in 1958 and 1960. He also took the Southwestern Louisiana Institutes.

He worked as a Sinclair oil company landowner, pipeline operator, land surveyor, newspaper writer, college lecturer of the English language, social worker at the Skid Row in L.A, an employee of the L.E. Service, and trainer at the U.S. Job Corps over the years.

His wife, Pearl, and Burke divided up their time between Lolo, Montana, and Louisiana, New Iberia. Alafair Burke, their daughter, is likewise an intriguing nova. The most influential book in his life is William Faulkner’s 1929 family tragedy “The Sound and the Wrath.”

The Mystery Writers of America have recognized Burke three times. The MWA’s Grand Master Award was awarded in Burke. An Edgar prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship are rarely received by a mystery author.
