Ice-T Biography

Tracy Lauren Marrow was born in Newark, New Jersey, USA, on February 16, 1958, to Solomon, an African-American conveyor belt technician at the ‘Rapistan Conveyor Company,’ and Alice Marrow, a Creole. Though he was raised in an area rife with bigotry, he survived unhurt due to his lighter skin, which he acquired from his Creole mother.

He moved to View Park-Windsor Hills, a neighborhood near Los Angeles, to reside with his aunt’s family. He developed an interest in heavy metal music after sharing a room with his cousin Earl, an avid rock lover. He attended ‘Crenshaw High School’ after graduating from ‘Palms Junior High.’

When he was in high school, gangs were a pervasive presence in the Los Angeles public school system. Students from the ‘Bloods’ and ‘Crips’ gangs attended ‘Crenshaw,’ and frequently clashed on school grounds. He was never a member of the ‘Bloods’ or the ‘Crips.’ However, he frequently read Iceberg Slim’s novels and regaled his pals with stories.

In 1976, he married Adrienne. They received a blessing in the form of a girl whom they called LeTesha. Additionally, he and Darlene Ortiz have a son named Ice Tracy Marrow. He married Nicole ‘Coco’ Marie Austin, a swimsuit model, in 2002. The couple welcomed their first child, Chanel Nicole Marrow, on November 28, 2015.

Ice-T Career

He enlisted in the ‘US Army’ in 1979. He enlisted in the army because the money he earned peddling marijuana and stealing car stereos was insufficient to support his girlfriend and daughter. He spent four years in the army. He returned to South Central in 1983 with the purpose of establishing himself as a hip-hop performer.

He was, however, drawn into street crime and became a jewel thief and pimp. By 1983, he had taken the moniker Ice-T in honor of his favorite author Iceberg Slim. He then recorded ‘The Coldest Rap,’ a rap. He was hospitalized in 1985 after being injured in a vehicle accident.

He won an open mic competition adjudicated by Kurtis Blow around this period, indicating his desire to pursue a professional rap career. After perfecting his abilities, he began making music for videos and self-released albums.

In 1987, he signed with ‘Sire Records’ and released ‘Rhyme Pays,’ his self-titled debut album, which went gold. Between 1987 and 1988, he recorded the title theme song for Dennis Hopper’s film ‘Colors,’ which focused on Los Angeles’ inner-city gang life. He subsequently released his second album, ‘Power,’ which earned him critical acclaim and gold certification.

In 1989, he collaborated with former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra on the caustic lead single from his album ‘The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech… Just Watch What You Say.’ On his 1992 album ‘Body Count,’ he included the contentious track ‘Cop Killer.’ The song was written with the intention of being a tale from the perspective of criminals seeking vengeance against racist police officers.

The controversy surrounding ‘Cop Killer’ forced ‘Warner Bros’ to delay the release of Ice-subsequent T’s solo album, ‘Home Invasion,’ in 1993. The musician parted ties with ‘Warner Bros. Records and began releasing his work under the imprint ‘Priority Records.’ In 1993, he starred in the comedy film ‘Who’s the Man?’ in which he portrayed a drug dealer who becomes irritated when he is addressed by his given name, ‘Chauncey,’ rather than his street name, ‘Nighttrain.’

During this time period, he collaborated with heavy metal bands. He recorded a duet with Slayer for the film ‘Judgment Night.’ In 1995, he appeared as a guest on ‘Black Sabbath’s Forbidden. His subsequent albums, ‘Ice-T VI: Return of the Real,’ ‘The Seventh Deadly Sin,’ and ‘Gangsta Rap,’ all failed due to their departure from the topics of his earlier efforts.

In 2000, he began starring in the NBC police drama series ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as the fictional NYPD Detective ‘Odafin Tutuola.’ Numerous awards and nominations have been bestowed to the series, which has generated numerous spin-offs. Along with his music career, he has dabbled in acting, appearing in films such as ‘New Jack City,’ ‘Ricochet,’ ‘Trespass,’ ‘Surviving the Game,’ and ‘Johnny Mnemonic.’

In 2006, he launched his own reality show, ‘Ice-T Rap School,’ in which he taught eight teenagers from ‘York Preparatory School’ how to rap for a chance to win an imitation gold chain with a microphone. He had a celebrity guest appearance on MTV’s sketch comedy show ‘Short Circuitz’ in 2007. He was also featured in the short musical film ‘Hands of Hatred’ that same year.

He directed and executive produced the 2012 documentary ‘Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap,’ which starred various rappers. ‘Body Count’ released ‘Bloodlust,’ their sixth studio album, in 2017. Ice-T released his first solo hip hop music in ten years in July 2019. ‘Feds In My Rearview’ was the title of the track.
