Ian McKellen Bio Data :

Ian Murray McKellen was born on May 25, 1939, in Burnley, Lancashire, England, to Margery Lois (Sutcliffe) and Denis Murray McKellen, a civil engineer and lay preacher, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest stage and film actors both in his native Great Britain and globally. He has twice been nominated for an Academy Award and has won every major theatrical award in the UK and US. He is descended from Scots, Northern Irish, and English ancestors. His parents moved Ian and his older sister, Jean, to Wigan, a mill town, when he was a teenager. Ian spent the majority of World War II in this small town. His obsession with acting and the theatre grew quickly, and his parents encouraged him to pursue it. They would take him to plays, especially those by William Shakespeare. Ian’s interest in theatre grew as a result of the amateur school productions.

When Ian was old enough to start school, he made it a point to audition for all of the plays. He honed his skills at Bolton School, in particular, from an early age. Indeed, his first Shakespearian role was as Malvolio in “Twelfth Night” at Bolton. Ian started attending theatre festivals in Stratford-upon-Avon, where he saw Laurence Olivier, Wendy Hiller, John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, and Paul Robeson perform. He continued his English Drama education, but it soon fell by the wayside as he focused more and more on acting. In 1961, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree and started his professional career.

For the next few years, McKellen started working in theatre. Ian’s homosexuality was unknown to most people; he saw no need to make it official, and he hadn’t even told his family. He didn’t see the point in bringing it up because they didn’t seem involved. Ian came out of the closet on the BBC Radio 4 programme in 1988, when debating Margaret Thatcher’s “Section 28” law, which made it illegal for local governments to encourage homosexuality as a family relationship. McKellen had ample justification to take a stand. Since then, he has been an outspoken supporter of gay rights.

Ian currently resides in Limehouse, where he previously shared a home with his long-time partner Sean Mathias. The two men have also collaborated on the film Bent (1997) and in a number of high-end stage productions. McKellen is still involved in the theatre and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990 for his contributions to the arts. He has, however, made a number of promising forays into filmmaking.

He has starred in a number of Shakespearean adaptations, including the well-received Richard III (1995), as well as a number of other films. His star, on the other hand, has only recently begun to shine in the eyes of North American audiences. Audiences were captivated by her roles in Cold Comfort Farm (1995), Apt Pupil (1998), and Gods and Monsters (1998). McKellen’s success in the latter, in particular, caused a stir in Hollywood, winning him many awards and nominations, including a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. McKellen continues to work extensively on stage,’solidifying’ his ‘role’ as Laurence Olivier’s worthy’successor’ in the best sense, such as in Trevor Nunn’s King Lear (2008) / Great Performances: King Lear (2008) and a range of other staggering performances full of generously euphoric joy, such as “Peter Pan” and Nol Coward’s “Current Laught”

McKellen’s portrayal of Magneto in X-Men (2000) and its sequels brought him mainstream recognition. He is best known for his role as Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” film series, which he reprised in “The Hobbit” trilogy. In National Theatre Live: King Lear (2018), he reprised the role of ‘King Lear’ with new creative perspectives, providing an invaluable mesmerising experience as a natural force of stage – and screen – of limitless kindness through his unrivalled portrayal of the titanically helpless king.
