Later, he was freed. After being released from prison, he worked in a chalk mine before enrolling in the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf to study sculpture and graphics.

Gunter Grass Career

He worked as a writer, artist, and graphic designer for the following few years before relocating to West Berlin in 1953. He attended the Berlin University of the Arts and continued his education there. He was an active member of Hans Werner Richter’s Group 47, a loose but important group of German authors and critics. Heinrich Böll, Uwe Johnson, and Ilse Aichinger were also among the group’s members.

He was employed at a publishing firm when his debut novel, ‘The Tin Drum,’ was released in 1959. Despite the fact that it was his debut novel, the work was a critical and popular success, establishing him as a rising literary figure in Germany. In 1961, he published the novella ‘Cat and Mouse’, followed by the 1963 book ‘Dog Years’.

Together with these works, ‘The Tin Drum’ formed the Danzig Trilogy, which examines how Nazism and World War II altered the course of Danzig’s history.

In 1977, he released ‘The Flounder,’ a novel based on the folktale ‘The Fisherman and His Wife. This book, which deals with the battle between the sexes, was labeled anti-feminist. The book was roundly criticized by feminists. In 1999, he published ‘My Century,’ a summary of the twentieth century’s numerous atrocities.

Three years later, he published the novella ‘Crabwalk,’ which chronicles the events surrounding the sinking of a refugee ship by a submarine. It was a smashing success.

Apart from being a novelist, he was also active in social and political action, supporting the Social Democratic Party of Germany and its programs for numerous decades. He was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1993 and was awarded the Hermann Kesten Prize two years later, in 1995.

In 1999, the Swedish Academy bestowed upon him the world’s highest literary honor, the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was hailed as a writer “whose frolicsome dark tales depict history’s lost face.” He was named ‘2012 European of the Year’ by the European Movement Denmark (Europabevgelsen) for his political debates on European issues.
