Grant Hill Biography

Hill is the son of Calvin Hill, a former NFL football player, and Janet Hill, his wife. He was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. While attending Duke University, Grant dated actress Jada Pinkett Smith. Anita Baker introduced Hill to Canadian artist Tamia in Detroit, Michigan.

On July 24, 1999, Hill and Tamia married. Myla Grace Hill, their daughter, was born on January 23, 2002. Tamia gave birth to their second daughter, Lael Rose Hill, on August 9, 2007. Windermere, Florida is the family’s home.

Hill earned the American Academy of Achievement’s Golden Plate Award in 1999. Hill became a champion for MRSA awareness and prevention when his wife contracted a potentially fatal methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection in 2003.

He has appeared in public service announcements for Stop MRSA Now!, a non-profit organization. Hill obtained a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Duke University.

He studied at Duke University and is largely regarded as one of the school’s top players. After four years of collegiate basketball, Hill spent his professional career with four NBA teams: the Detroit Pistons, the Orlando Magic, the Phoenix Suns, and the Los Angeles Clippers.




He spent the majority of his career in the small forward position. Hill also co-hosts NBA TV’s NBA Inside Stuff.

Hill spent four years as a Duke Blue Devils basketball player. He was named the 1994 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, a two-time NCAA All-American, and a two-time NCAA champion.

Hill was regarded as one of Duke’s greatest players and one of the greatest college basketball players of his age. Hill was drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the third overall choice in the NBA draught in 1994 after graduating from Duke. He was a co-recipient of the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 1995.

During the early stages of his NBA career, Hill was widely regarded as one of the game’s top all-around players, frequently leading his team in points, rebounds, and assists.  However, an ankle injury in 2000 altered the course of his career.

The injury-plagued him for several years, forcing him to undergo surgery in March 2003, which resulted in life-threatening complications and required him to miss the whole 2003–04 season.

Hill was named to the Eastern Conference All-Star Team in 2005 while playing with the Orlando Magic. He reached the Western Conference Finals with the Phoenix Suns in 2010. Hill averaged 13.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game in the 12 seasons following his ankle injury.

Hill announced his retirement from the NBA on June 1, 2013. He is a seven-time NBA All-Star, a five-time NBA All-Star, and a three-time NBA Sportsmanship Award winner.




He was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018. On June 24, 2015, and an ownership group led by Hill and Tony Ressler acquired the Atlanta Hawks.
