Gloria Steinem Bio Data :
Gloria Steinem, in full Gloria Marie Steinem, American feminist, political activist, and writer, (born March 25, 1934, Toledo, Ohio, U.S.), who was an outspoken champion of the women’s liberation movement during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Steinem spent her early years traveling in a mobile house with her parents. After their divorce in 1946, Gloria settled in Toledo, Ohio, with her mother and started attending school on a regular basis for the first time. The added burden of taking care of her mother, who was chronically ill, characterized her childhood.
Steinem went to India on a scholarship after graduating from Smith College in 1956. She took part in peaceful demonstrations against government policies there. She started working in New York City in 1960 as a writer and journalist. In 1963, Steinem gained popularity with her essay “I Was a Playboy Bunny,” which recounted her experience at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Club as a scantily clad waitress.
When she attended a meeting of a radical feminist group, the Redstockings, her interest in feminism escalated in 1968. Her paternal grandmother, proud of her feminist heritage, served as president of the Ohio Women’s Suffrage Association from 1908 to 1911. In July 1971, Steinem founded the National Women’s Political Caucus with Betty Friedan, Bella Abzug and Shirley Chisholm.
She started discussing the idea of a new women’s magazine the same year, one that dealt with contemporary issues from a feminist viewpoint. The outcome was Ms. magazine, which first appeared in the December 1971 issue of New York as an insert. The first stand-alone issue was published the next year.
Steinem gave activist organisations a great deal of her time and became an outspoken spokesman for the women’s liberation movement. She was active in the creation of the Women’s Trade Union Coalition, Voters for Choice, Women Against Pornography, and the Media Center for Women. She hosted the TV documentary series Woman with Gloria Steinem in 2016, which focused on topics affecting women.
Her publications include the Outrageous Acts and Daily Rebellions (1983) essay collections and Going Beyond Words: Age, Anger, Sex, Power, Wealth, Muscles: Breaking the Gender Boundaries (1994); Revolution from Within (1992), a work on women’s self-esteem; and Marilyn (1997), on Marilyn Monroe. Steinem also wrote a memoir on the lane, My Childhood (2015).
In 1986, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Steinem faced a very personal challenge. With medication, she was able to beat the disease. That same year, in the book Marilyn: Norma Jean, Steinem discussed one of America’s most famous women. The following year, after the publication was sold to an Australian corporation, she became a consulting editor at Ms Magazine.
