Fat Joe Biography

Fat Joe was born Joseph Antonio Cartagena in the South Bronx, New York City, on August 19, 1970, to parents of Puerto Rican and Cuban ancestry. He grew up in public housing in a rough neighborhood and used burglary as a means of supplementing his family’s livelihood.

His older brother exposed him to music, and he grew up listening to both Latin and Zulu. His early years were affected by the music of the ‘Furious Five,’ ‘Funky 4 + 1,’ and ‘Theodore.’ He drew inspiration for his songs from his surroundings.

He was formerly married to Lorena Cartagena, but the couple divorced in 2012. Ryan, Joey, and Azariah are their three children.

He obtained a contract with ‘Relativity Records’ in the early 1990s as a member of the group D.I.T.C. (Diggin In The Crates crew) and performed under the stage name ‘Fat Joe da Gangsta.’ In 1993, he released his self-titled debut album, ‘Represent.’ Among the artists featured on the album were Diamond D., Lord Finesse, and The Beatnuts.

The album’s main track, ‘Flow Joe,’ debuted at the top of the ‘Billboard Hop Rap Singles list. Other hits from the same album included ‘Watch the Sound’ and ‘This Shit is Real. His second album, ‘Jealous One’s Envy’ (1995), featured contributions from Diamond D. and the legendary artist KRS-One.

The album’s lead song, ‘Envy,’ peaked at number eight on the ‘Hot Rap Tracks list. Additionally, the album included ‘Watch Out,’ which featured Latino rapper Big Pun, whose work Fat Joe has listened to since his adolescent years. His fourth studio album, ‘Jealous Ones Still Envy’ (J.O.S.E. ), was released in 2001 and included a slew of notable artists, including Irv Gotti, Ja Rule, Ludacris, Ashanti, R. Kelly, Busta Rhymes, and Buju Banton. This was his most successful record, earning him a platinum certification.

The album’s lead single, ‘We Thuggin,’ became a smash, as did Irv Gotti’s ‘What’s Luv?’ with Ja Rule and Ashanti.

Fat Joe’s fifth studio album, ‘Loyalty,’ was not as commercially successful as his previous four. He recorded tracks for the ‘Terror Squad’s second album, ‘True Story,’ in 2004. Joe’s collaboration with Remy Ma, ‘Lean Back,’ became a major smash.

Joe’s sixth studio album, ‘All or Nothing,’ was released in 2005 and featured guest appearances by Eminem, Nelly, R. Kelly, and Mase.

Additionally, the album included the single ‘My Fofo,’ which targeted ’50 Cent,’ another New York rapper, who replied with his song ‘Piggy Bank,’ extending the two’s antagonism. In 2006, he released his seventh studio album, ‘Me, Myself & I,’ on his new label, ‘Virgin Records.’

This album featured Lil Wayne’s chart-topping single ‘Make It Rain.’

‘The Elephant In The Room,’ his eighth solo album, arrived at number six on the ‘Billboard Hot 100,’ and was distributed by ‘Imperial Records.’ His ninth studio album, ‘J.O.S.E.2,’ debuted at number 73 on the ‘Billboard 200.’

It featured other musicians including as Fabolous, Ron Browz, Lil’ Kim, and T-Rain, with Akon singing the lead track, ‘One.’

Fat Joe’s follow-up album, ‘The Darkside Vol. 1,’ was released in July 2010 on the label ‘E1,’ and peaked at number 27 on the ‘Billboard 200.’ The album featured the hits ‘(Ha Ha) Slow Down’ and ‘If It Ain’t About Money.’

Joe released the singles ‘Another Round’ and ‘Yellow Tape’ from his yet-to-be-titled 11th studio album the following year. After nearly a decade, he scored a ‘Top 40’ hit with ‘All the Way Up,’ which peaked at number 27 on the ‘Hot 100.’ This track was featured Fat Joe and Remy Ma and was taken from the album ‘Plato O Plomo’ (2017).

In 2018, he released his 11th solo album, ‘Family Ties,’ which featured the collaboration with Dre on the tune ‘Pick It Up.’ Fat Joe has starred in a number of films, including ‘Thicker Than Water (1999), ‘Empire,’ and ‘Happy Feet’ (2006), as well as a Netflix original series, ‘She’s Gotta Have It (2017–present).




Apart from music, he has dabbled in other projects such as a fashion line called ‘FJ560,’ a barbershop, and a clothes store called ‘Fat Joe’s Halftime.’ When rapper ‘Big Pun,’ whose music he adored, died at the age of 28 due to obesity, Joe was startled and heartbroken and resolved to lose weight himself.
