Fairuza Balk Biography

Fairuza Alejandra Feldthouse was born in Point Reyes, California, on May 21, 1974. Her father, a touring folk performer and founding member of the 1960s psychedelic rock group ‘Kaleidoscope,’ named her Persian. Growing up in Turkey, he learned Greek, Turkish, Iraqi, and Iranian music.

Her mother, a traditional dance expert, performed, researched, and taught dances from Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, and Spain. Balk’s parents divorced soon after her birth.

She was raised on a commune-style ranch near Cloverdale, California, with her mother. They eventually moved to Vancouver, BC, where she began performing at the age of 6. After working in the UK and France for a few years, Balk, then 15, enrolled in a high school in Vancouver, but struggled to fit in the classroom.
