Cantona was born in the French town of Marseille. Albert Cantona, his father, was a nurse and a painter, and Eleonore Raurich, his mother, was a dressmaker.

His parents were Sardinian immigrants. Jean-Marie and Joel are his brothers. His football career in England lasted six brilliant years, during which he scored numerous goals and became infamous for his on-field violence.

After earning numerous honors and recognition on the football field, he retired from the sport in 1997 at the age of 30.

He has expressed remorse in different interviews for making that decision, stating that he could have withdrawn from football at a time when his career was accelerating. However, he did not end his life there.

Cantona began his football career with his hometown team, SO Caillolais. This hometown squad was already well-known for producing football legends like as Roger Jouve, Jean Tigana, and Christophe Galtier.

Cantona began his career as a goalkeeper for this squad but moved up front later in his career. He appeared in over 200 matches with SO Caillolais.

In 1983, he made his professional football debut with Auxerre. He was a member of this team’s youth team for at least two years.

In 1984, he enlisted in the military, putting his football career on hold. He was dismissed from the national service in the same year and lent to Martigues.

He began his professional career with Auxerre in 1986. Cantona made 68 appearances and scored 21 goals in two seasons with Auxerre.

He was penalized for the first time in 1987 after punching his own teammate, Bruno Martini, in the face and resulting in a black eye.

He received another three-month suspension the following year for dangerously tackling Nantes’ Michel Der Zakarian. He signed a record-breaking 2.3 million pound deal with Marseille in 1988. He was suspended from the French team the following year for swearing at then-national coach Henri Michel.

In 1989, during a friendly match against Torpedo Moscow, he kicked the ball into the crowd, took off his shirt, and flung it away, earning him a month’s suspension from his team. In the same year, he was loaned to Montpellier for a year.

There, he got into an altercation with his teammates, hurling his boots in their faces. The club was on the point of dismissing him but chose to retain him after imposing a 10-day suspension. The team captured the French championship.

Cantona threw the ball at the referee during a 1991 match against Nimes after being dissatisfied with one of his decisions.

This prompted the French Football Federation to convene a disciplinary hearing, during which it was agreed that he would be barred from the grounds for a month.

He referred to every member of the hearing committee as an ‘idiot,’ and his suspension was increased to two months. Cantona announced his early retirement from French football on 16 December 1991.

Michel Platini, the national team coach and one of his biggest fans, advised him to return. Cantona chose to pursue a career in football with England.

In 1992, he returned from retirement to play for Sheffield Wednesday but left after being urged to remain another week. He made his England debut in a larger-scale contest for Manchester United in Lisbon. Manchester United acquired him for 1.2 million pounds.

In 1993, he was punished by the FA Cup for spitting on a Leeds fan during Manchester United’s debut game at Elland Road. In the same year, he competed in the United’s European Cup, which was lost in Istanbul, Turkey, by Galatasaray.

He accused the referee of cheating, ran afoul of the Turkish police, and was later barred from four European matches by UEFA.

In the same year, he scored two goals against Chelsea in the FA Cup final. Cantona booted off Richard Shaw in 1995, during a match against Crystal Palace, after Richard ripped his shirt off during the game.

He also kicked a member of the audience, injuring Crystal Palace supporter Matthew Simmons. He made his comeback against Liverpool in 1996.

In 1997, at the age of 30, he announced his retirement from football. He made his final appearance in a football match against West Ham. He appeared as an actor in the English film ‘Elizabeth’ in 1998. He directed the French film ‘Apporte-moi tonne amour’ in 2002.

In 2005, he coached the French beach football squad to victory in Rio de Janeiro’s inaugural FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. He made a cameo appearance in the 2008 Hollywood film ‘Jack Says’. He co-starred in and produced films such as ‘French Film’ and ‘Looking for Eric’ in 2009.
