Mr. Murphy was born and reared in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, specifically in the Bushwick area of the borough.

In addition to being a telephone operator, his mother, Lillian (Laney), his father, Charles Edward Murphy (1940–1969), worked as a transit police officer as well as an amateur actor and comedian.

When Murphy’s single mother became ill, the eight-year-old Murphy and his older brother Charlie were placed in foster care for a year, which they completed.

Murphy has stated in interviews that his time in foster care had a significant impact on the development of his sense of humor.

The two of them were later raised by their mother and stepfather, Vernon Lynch, who worked as an ice cream plant foreman. They were born in Roosevelt, New York.
