Ed Markey is an American politician. From 1976 through 2013, he served as the Democratic Party’s congressman for Massachusetts’ 7th congressional district. Markey has spent more than four decades in Congress, serving in both the House and the Senate. From 1973 to 1976, he served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Ed Markey (Politician) Biography

Markey was born in Malden, Massachusetts, on July 11, 1946, to Christina M. and milkman John E. Markey. Markey’s mother was valedictorian of her high school class but was unable to attend college due to the death of her mother and the need to care for the family. Markey attended Immaculate Conception School and Malden Catholic High School, and his family was Irish Catholic.

Markey worked as an ice cream truck driver and salesperson in Lexington, Massachusetts, beginning in the summer of 1965. Markey earned a Bachelor of Arts from Boston College in 1968 and a Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School in 1972. He worked as a lawyer in private practise after graduation.

From 1968 to 1973, Markey was a member of the United States Army Reserve, where he rose to the rank of Specialist Fourth Class. He enlisted as a junior in college before learning whether or not he would be called to serve in the Vietnam War conscription. He also stated that, despite having a Reserve position, if he had been conscripted, he would have responded the induction notice and gone to Vietnam despite his opposition to the war.

Susan Blumenthal, who served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services for Women’s Health and held the rank of rear admiral as Assistant US Surgeon General, has been Markey’s wife since 1988.

Torbert Macdonald, the incumbent Congressman, died in office on May 21, 1976. Markey, who had just been elected to a third term in the state legislature, ran in a Democratic primary for the 7th district, which had twelve candidates at the time. With a plurality of 22 percent of the vote in the primary—the real struggle in this solidly Democratic district—Markey earned the nomination.

He defeated Republican Richard Daly by 77 percent to 18 percent in the November 1976 election. Markey was elected later that night after the election combined as a special election for the remainder of Macdonald’s 11th term and a regular election for a full two-year term. As a result, he has more seniority than other Representatives who were initially elected in 1976.

Markey raised concerns about the lack of security surrounding air cargo carried on commercial passenger airlines in 2003, claiming that if passenger baggage is examined for explosive devices, so should cargo carried on the plane. He was successful in getting a 100% air cargo screening requirement enacted into law in 2007. Markey wrote the provision requiring all cargo on passenger planes to be screened in the bill codifying the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations.

After Barack Obama nominated him for Secretary of State, Markey was the first to announce his candidacy for a special election to fill Kerry’s seat on December 27, 2012. Even before Kerry was confirmed by the Senate, other lawmakers, including Kerry, endorsed him. Markey defeated colleague Congressman Stephen Lynch in a primary contest on April 30, 2013, to win the Democratic nomination. On June 25, he defeated Republican candidate Gabriel E. Gomez in a general special election, completing Kerry’s tenure for the remaining 17 months.

When Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol, Markey was on Capitol Hill to participate in the 2021 United States Electoral College vote count. He and his team took cover in an undisclosed area during the attack. Markey tweeted after the Capitol was secured that Trump should be impeached. Markey made his statements as Congress reconvened to tally the electoral votes, branding Republicans who objected to the count seditious. The next day, he called for the United States Constitution’s Twenty-fifth Amendment to be invoked.
