Doug Jones was born in Fairfield, Alabama on May 4, 1954. Gordon and Gloria Jones are his parents. His father worked for United States Steel, and his mother was a stay-at-home mother. Jones graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in political science in 1976 and from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law with a Juris Doctorate in 1979. He is a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Jones began his political career as a staff counsel to Alabama Senator Howell Heflin’s United States Senate Judiciary Committee. Jones then served as an Assistant United States Attorney from 1980 to 1984, before resigning to work at a Birmingham, Alabama, private law firm from 1984 to 1997.
On December 12, 1992, Jones married Louise New. They are the parents of three children.

Doug Jones Career
Doug Jones was appointed as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama by President Bill Clinton in 1997. The successful prosecution of two Ku Klux Klan members for the 1963 Birmingham church bombing, which killed four African-American girls, and the indictment of domestic terrorist Eric Rudolph were two of Jones’ most notable cases. After Clinton’s presidency ended in 2001, he returned to private practice.
He announced his candidacy for the United States Senate in the 2017 special election after Republican incumbent Jeff Sessions resigned to become Attorney General of the United States. He faced former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore in the general election after winning the Democratic primary in August.
Jones was viewed as a long shot in a staunchly Republican state. Moore was accused of sexually assaulting and acting inappropriately with several females a month before the election, including some who were minors at the time. 1st Jones received 22,000 votes in the special election, winning 50 percent to 48 percent of the vote.
Jones was Alabama’s only statewide elected Democrat at the time and the first since Lucy Baxley was elected President of the Alabama Public Service Commission in 2008. Since 1997, when Howell Heflin left office, Democrats had not represented Alabama in the United States Senate. Jones was regarded as a moderate Democrat who was willing to work with Republicans and break ranks with his own party on some issues. Jones ran for a full term in 2020, but was defeated by Republican nominee Tommy Tuberville.
He became a political commentator for CNN in January 2021. During the spring semester of 2021, Jones was a GU Politics Fellow at the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service.
